Would 2mb adsl be good for gaming?!

Oky well i have a 4mb at the moment..But it's being shared between 2 heavy users (me being one)

But Brother is moving out so i don't need 4mb(actually wouldn't mind keeping it) the cost is just a lil to high ..

So i'm going down to the 2mb in January ..But is this still good for gaming?EU and Local server are mostly which i play on..Current latency on EU is 170-190..

So will i see a huge increase or do some of you have a 2mb line and know which latency you're currently getting?

Downloads are between 50-100Gigs on a 4mb..

From a gaming point of view, even a 1Mbit/s sync will be just fine; your latencies won't really change.
Browsing, you won't really notice a difference IMO.
Youtube experience will be hard hit when watching HD videos (I think)
 
The adsl speed does not affect latency. So a 2Mb, or a 1Mb line should still be able to get 170ms - 190ms. Games do not use much bandwidth, only really when new maps, patches etc are needed.
 
384kbps is enough for most games.

The only game that I've ever encountered that didn't work well with 384kbps ADSL was Call of Duty Black Ops, because it had a terrible server list that you couldn't really filter. The result was the 384kbps ADSL was too slow to download the list in time before the game refreshed the list again.

1Mbps ADSL is sufficient to host games too, seeing that it has the same upload speed as 2Mbps & 4Mbps ADSL in SA!

I'm on 2Mbps MWEB uncapped and it works very well for gaming & downloading (I'm not downloading any Torrents though). I'm also barely watching YouTube videos and if I do, I download them using a download manager.

i'm with MWEB atm..so 2mb uncapped is what i'm currently talking about

So what latencies are you getting?

2Meg is perfectly fine.
 
I'm getting like 15ms to the WebAfrica servers in Cape Town. I don't play on international servers at all.
When I dial my WebAfrica account, I get about 2ms lower latencies to the WebAfrica servers - so I'm sticking to MWEB ;)
 
I would agree with 2meg.

Since I upgraded to 2meg I've found gaming to be better as you no longer have to worry about running single threaded on your ADSL. I no longer have to switch off all the wifi connections (table, phone, laptop, wife laptop) when I game.

Also with insane size of patches lately, your going to want at least 2meg
 
Speed is a factor if you are hosting games, not joining them.

Back in 2006 before 384k, we had 192k and everyone played Battlefield 2 on full servers.

Now everyone has at least 512k upload. That is the biggest factor, 128k was just terrible for hosting anything. And even being on TS with 1 person and playing game would lag the game every time you talked (upload).

Having said all this, after I got 1mb I get 11-16 ping on some servers (I think on SAIX). I think this is because of other upgrades done by Telkom and not actually line speed.
 
If you run downloads while gaming then you're gonna have a rough time. If not then 1 or 2 mbps is easily fine.
