Would 4Mbps make a difference

If I play online (Xbox360 - internationally) the games runs smoothly, I've got 512Kbps. But as soon as my wife starts browsing the internet my games start lagging.

She mostly browse international sites. Now if I were to upgrade my line to 4Mbps, would that solve my lagging or won't I see a difference since the data is shaped?

No it wont, when you browse, irrespective of your speed, IE/Firefox will take 100% of available bandwidth. the only thing is that the periods of lag will be shorter. HOWEVER, get an application like netlimiter on the PC, and throttle the PC to use 75% of available bandwidth, always keeing some for your xbox. that's what i do :)

at 512, 75% should leave just over 128kbit, which is enough for your gaming. if you have a 4mbit connection, you only need 10%, giving her 90%.

Well I've installed netlimiter on my wife's laptop and also upgraded my line to 4Mbps. I just want to make sure I can get the first kill when playing online. :D
 
I must say after having 4Mbps line for a few days now, I can say it makes a difference. A person must still use something like netlimiter on any pc browsing the internet while you are playing.

I got disconnected from a server while playing on Xbox Live - I forgot to run netlimiter on the pc. I put it on and it was back to kicking ass on Call of Duty 4 Beta.

I almost got the most kills in one round (missed by 1 kill), which I never got before upgrading my line.

PS: Call of Duty 4 is going to be great :D
