I have a potential customer that will be getting Microsoft Small Business Edition that includes Exchange. We need the server to dial in automatically and fetch mail from a server on the web, and be the internet connection server.

Do you think iBurst will be reliable enough for this?

iBurst works fine for e-mail and stuff like this. I would recommend though that you get a reseller to do a test at your premises before you put pen to paper!

You would be absolutely out of your mind to use iBurst. It is the crappest service known to man.

I would not recommend this service for any type of business, albeit HOW small they are. You'd be better off with 56k dialup (you'll get your mail faster that way)

Sytze, it would be best to get a reseller to test your connection / signal, etc., as Kei suggests. Going on personal opinions from here would not be wise in this instance, as there has been various degrees of (no)success experienced by people on this forum. Good luck!

for that specific task I think it would be more than fine, ofcourse I cam talking from my perspective of a happy client with no troubles on my connection. Do what kei said, call a reseller like tradepage and get them to test it in the area you want to operate it from as that will be the biggest factor to the success or failure of iBurst for the task specified.

I can say this however, if you are going to use it and connect to the Bryanston or Northcliff towers, forget it.

Used a dialup at previous company for similar.... lots of problems with the modem dropping, etc... and was also very expensive... monthly phone bill exceeded R1000
Previous company then got ADSL and the problem was resolved.

Maybe for you, yes, but not for me.. I have found it to be quite reliable for what I use it for.

you must be one of the lucky ones... everyone I know who has used it, agrees that it is completely unuseable.

I am not lucky-

I am far from a basestation. I live 800m from an iBurst basestation that WBS might decided to switch on in the year 2030 (they blame Telkom for it not being active atm) as a result I experience a lot of problems and crap speeds sometimes.

However, I've come up with a setup that works for me and works well. Using a hardware router/firewall that was recommended by others on this forum and a normal run of the mill 100base T switch, I have stable speeds and connectivity. I am not using any software firewalls or anything like that as I've noticed they tend to make iBurst go pear shaped. Oh and I removed that HORRIBLE driver software WBS supplied from my computers.

I agree somedays and others not

Well I know about 50 people going the other way to Hellkom side, they don't want to but they thought iburst was good Product, they say why pay :: R600 a month for service where you just browse....

(I agree but in other ways not)

At times I have a stable fast connection for a couple of days (have seen 4,5 days), then I get periods where it disconnects / reconnects every 5 - 15 minutes, lasting for a couple of hours.

Good point, I've only been an ibusrt customer for two months and the main reason i got a "broadband" connection was for the full experience that a "broadband" connection was supposed to offer i.e online gaming, peer to peer etc. Turns out iburst is rubbish for online gaming ( my fault, should have done more research) and now p2p aswell. So in my humble opinion, iburst is great if you need mail and want really fast browsing.

Don't think many people paying R600/month are gonna be happy.

I suppose its a case of getting the right tool for the job...
Unfortunatley nothing else is available in my area, so i'm pretty scr*d. :(

Hi

Ask echoed by many ... .TEST it first... You'll notice that some of use are not exactly loving the service. As a rule of thumb, if you're close to the tower (less than 2KM) service tends to be ok.

I'd just suggest you make sure the Window$ server keeps redailling ;-)

In general, i'd actually suggest MyWireless (if you need to go wireless) ... I use this for quite a few businesses that only need mail and a "BIT" of browsing....

I've converted 2 clients with iBurst to DSL, with IS's uncapped services. Downtime measure in minutes, and 5 static IP's.

Compare this against iBursts' 9Gig package, and the unreliability and there's really no choice.
