Hi all,

Would anyone be interested in locally hosted KVM virtual servers? An example of what you can expect:

R99/pm
KVM virtualisation
1 vCore (Xeon E5 nodes)
512MB RAM
20GB SSD (RAID1)
1TB on a shared 1Gbit port at Hetzner JHB

Feedback is appreciated, if this gets some traction I might do this as a side project.

Have you had a look at go2cloud.co.za ?

Not sure how that would compare, but worth knowing what you are up against.

I've looked around.

Go2Cloud is several times more expensive, the closest I have come across are ;

HostAfrica which advertise unlimited traffic but when emailed they say it's capped at 50Mbs with a 200GB softcap, they're also OpenVZ

Domains.co.za which are excellent, but slightly more expensive.

Host1Plus which has node meltdowns every few months and uses OpenVZ...

Anyone else?

Sounds like you have done your homework!

Keep me posted, might need more RAM about 8GB

Self built on Supermicro boards.

Nope. Customer's job.

Define failover, these are lowend, cheap KVM boxes. Not production. If you need high availability and redundancy then it's your job.
 
Would be very interested, but the offering would need to be comparable to my current host - Contabo. Been with Contabo for a 3 years and have only had a few issues with them. (I understand your service would have to be a bit more expensive than theirs.)

I'm paying EUR26.99pm (less than R400 pm) for the following KVM based VPS

CPU: ten cores
Intel® Xeon® E5-2620v3 or E5-2630v4 processor
50 GB RAM (guaranteed)
1200 GB disk space (100% SSD)

I'd pay double the above rate for a similar spec for local hosting. domains.co.za VM8 is R3600pm and the spec is not even close to comparable. I use domains.co.za as my registrar but their pricing for VPS hosting is ridiculous. Blatant rip off.

I did some research on offering a similar service to you. In the end I had a deal where I could lease a fully spec'd server with a pretty beefy SAN, including half rack hosting at Teraco for a total cost of around R15K pm (iirc). Never bothered as I wasn't convinced there was enough interest in the SA market vs the international market to compete with the likes of Contabo and of course AWS and Azure.

I realize now I was wrong. Good luck with the venture, Hope it works out.

Hi,

Without getting into an arguement or hi-jackng the thread, I think some clarity is needed on this.
Our solution is Cloud VM's and not standalone VPS's.

Comparing costs of a VPS on a single server vs the cost of a VM on a high availability cloud is like comparing apples and oranges.

A VPS requires 1 servers hardware, plus a gbit switch. Anyone can do this and manage it with very little technical knowledge.

A Cloud VM requires multiple servers for redundancy, redundant SAN storage, redundant 10Gb/40Gb networking plus additional unused / reserved capacity on all hypervisors to withstand 2 hypervisor failures. There is also a cost for staff with the technical expertise for managing and maintaining all aspects of this cloud infrastructure.

Cloud VM's will always be more expensive than standard VPS's because of the additional hardware and ongoing management costs of the infrastructure. Both Cloud VM's and VPS's do have their place in the industry. However you can't compare their pricing without taking into account the infrastructure in the background, they simply not the same solution.

If you build the same spec as our VM8 on any cloud provider (local or international), you will see that our pricing is competitive compared to other cloud VM providers.
