WoW - ADSL or ISDN?

Just a quick note on ISDN:
A couple years ago I used to play EQ1 on 128 ISDN.
My phone bill was avaraging close to R3000 per month, with one or 2 R5000 spikes (kept forgetting to disconnect the router).
So check the call costs and the hours you will play per month.

Quite honestly, you can play the game just fine on 64K ISDN. In fact, my brother and I, networking the connection, manage to play simultaneously when connected at 64K (We have a European account each). By which I mean pretty consistant <500 ms latency, which is perfectly fine for WoW.

We connect at 128K on weekends so that we can download stuff in the time we're not playing (such as overnight).

Our first bill was a bit of a shock, but only cos it included installation, 2 month's rental and the line was disconnecting and redialing when it was idle for the first 2 weeks of use (R200 wasted! We promptly sorted that out...)

But now that we're pretty dilligent about when/how we connect, and aren't having anymore disconnects/redials, I can fully expect my telkom bill to be around R450, which is perfectly reasonable. That excludes Storm's 128K connect15 ISDN, mind you, at another R125.

+-R600 pm for a perfect connection to World of Warcraft every night and all weekend? Yes please. I can't honestly say I'm a heavy downloader anyway, for the most part I'm only using my internet for the occasional download, university work, IRC and World of Warcraft. So I'm perfectly satisfied.

Playing with a SAOL unshaped account depending on server load I generally get between 400 -600 with a spike every so often which settles itself within a couple of minutes. Play religiously and I would say average 22 hours a week with the wife posting like mad on forums and I still have to hit the 3gig. That said I do not dl and surf allot.

Thing with ISDN is you have to watch the hours your on and your restricted to call more, and what about all those wasted WoW hours on public hols. If you want to avoid the shock horror phone bills IMHO go with the ADSL at least you'll be able to play whenever you choose without having to worry about your phone bill.

Hm, I guess I'll wait on my next bill to decide. =\

I still can't justify that extra R200 per month. Rather a lower erratic bill than a higher fixed bill...

Wait til the addiction kicks in :p you'll be singing a different tune  .

Has anyone tried contacting Nu-metro with regards to the SA release of WoW? I tried a couple of months back but got no response :( .

Geez I'm behind the times here ...

I tried playing wow on normal ADSL, Unshaped ADSL and the NukeCap proxy

Normal ping: 2000 -15000ms
Unshaped : 800 - 1400ms (SAOL)
NukeCap : 700 - 2000ms

So I don't even see any sub 500ms pings here ...

What the **** am I doing wrong ??

No idea, I average between 500 - 700. Even on my old PC so I don't think it's hardware related. Are you running a firewall?

Well my bill came this month, and it was R550. Which is perfectly fine by me. I'm paying less than I would on ADSL, whilst not using it significantly less than I would (due to University). And my WoW pings are amazing.

So all in all I'm happy.

Congrats man. Question to you though. What happens when you hit varsity hols and you start to feel the itch
