Whats the success rate for getting WOW to run on WINE, and how does it handle it?

Im sick and tired of patching and cleaning this Vista install and trying to remove the countless bugs that seem to infect it.. and I want to go back to the security and stability of my linux desktop.

Does WOW run okay on Linux.. do you have experience running WOW on linux?

Thanks, saw those links.. will be trying them when Ubuntu finishes downloading.. was wondering if anyone had ingame xp.

Its a hit and miss, depending on which Wine version your distro have and so on. Personally I could get it to work but always run into trouble when I need to use Vent/TS and then having problems with the mic in linux specifically when using those apps.

Other than that WoW mostly runs easily on wine.

I think though, when one learns how to have your Vista machine in such a statem you can have it working to the point where you do not need to do anything to it. Personally my gaming machine still runs Vista, purely because it works for games and I have no timee or patience to reinstall and get everything to work again.

Lappy and Work pc and even my HTPC are all happy with some kind of flavour of Linux, mostly I prefer Arch.

I don't understand people who complain about bugs & infections etc. Its only your own fault.

1: Run a decent router. Block everything, allow only apps/ports you need.
2: Run 1 proper piece of software on your pc. Kaspersky Internet Security will do.

0 serious problems, 16 years and counting...

and tbh, if 90% of the worlds pc where running on Linux don't you think it would be ****ed over by ppl/malware and bull also?

I have heard rumours of accounts being flagged for running Ubuntu/Linux software as their OS. No idea if this is true but I wouldn't want my account flagged for anything :o So I have never tried to run it on anything else but Windows.

only problem I know of if you run wow on Linux is that they dont support it. So if some patch doesnt work etc. They wont help.

I run a lot of defenses on Vista.. that I wouldnt have to run on Linux.. such as an AV and a malware remover. Problem with propriety software ... is EVEN with a firewall, router, etc etc etc yada yada yada... bugs can find their way in through bugs in the OS that MS can sometimes take up to years to patch.

While I am sure there would be an increase in malware for linux should it be the popular OS.. it would still be more secure than windows... simply by the way it handles administration permissions and security.. and the fact that exploits and bad code are generally fixed right away. Great, you like Windows and you have good experiences with it... but I prefer the safety and security of Linux.

My fiance often uses this laptop, and she brings USB disks from the University that often have little bugz on them.. while AVs will catch most of the mainstream bugs... there are the odd ones out that get through the nets no matter how secure your system is.

The worst.. is when your system has being rooted.. its almost impossible to clean the buggers out without a format.

Im glad you have had 16 years of no problems.. you are the first microsoft user I have ever found to have that kind of experience. Congrats. I got my first microsoft virus before they even made windows. Lucky me. My computer got STONED.

Definitely a hit and a miss. I ran Ubuntu 9.04 and figured I'd try WINE + WoW (because it's the only real game I play). Even though it worked, it crashed a lot. Player profiles didn't show up (they're blacked out) and the character's feet didn't move. Was also plagued with a lot of lag issues where I'd play normally, kill stuff, run around and then realize I can't do anything else (like hand in quests) because I'm actually lagging. Ends up disconnecting me or crashing the game. Or suddenly coming back to life where you realized you accidentally aggro'ed mobs and you died 5 minutes ago.

No, it wasn't my connection. I switched back to Windows and everything worked fine.

Haven't tried running it in Virtual Box though...

w1z4rd, I'm in no way a MS fanboy, I am actually a Novell Admin and thus also work with linux allot also etc.

While linux is great its just simply not for the everyday person. While I wish it was, I'm realistic enough to know that it will never really compete there, a big part being something u mentioned that makes it great, "by the way it handles administration permissions and security"

The sad thruth is we need MS / Windows with all its ****. I say allot of how it runs and **** you get falls on you and you can 'just about' prevent all the crap.
So ye "**** happens" if something new gets released and you are not protected yet and it just happens to run onto your system.

I agree with Snowwar. I also have used windows around for like...maybe 15 years and I learned my lesson the first time I got a virus.

1. Install windows
2. Install AV (My personal favourite is Symantec AV corp ed, nothing like the norton one)
3. Pleasurable experience.

Also, never use IE. Firefox + ad block plus and some addons. Once everything works and is installed, try to use a normal user account.

Or a restricted one.

You can have two (or more) accounts, one a normal/administrative account for software installation and the such, the other a restricted account with which you can browse and play games without having to worry about something buggering your PC up. Also, disable all Windows shares.

On the topic of shares - if I put a trojan executable on any Windows share, will Windows execute that trojan automatically without me browsing to that share? (background file operation).

It is fine to have shares, even a empty "upload" folder that is writeable. Sure you can upload a trojan or virus or whatever there, just expect my AV to immediately quarantine it, then pop up and ask me what to do with it. At which time I usually go "delete" as I really don't care what it is, I'd rather the AV just get rid of it.

That is why I say, 1 good AV and you really don't need anti spyware ect, because a good AV just delete the files are they get to your pc. I have downloaded files where I chose to download it, only to find them deleted because they had a virus in.

Well since I am a sys admin, Im not your average user, so I am sure, Linux is not for everyone, just like Windows or Mac is not for everyone. Linux is for me though. I understand Windows has its place. Simple software for simple minds and all that kinda stuff.. and I know Linux doesnt do everything.. but it does what I want it to do.. now Im hoping it will WoW for me. This was not a thread to recommend to people to all leave Windows and start using Linux to game. This was a thread as I wanted to game WoW on Linux.

Dont know whats hard with SuSE though.. what do you have problems with it as an admin? Couple of months ago I installed it on 300 laptops for the staff of a tecnikon... and umm.. they handle it fine (these are serious technically challenged AA staff). It suites the institution purposes perfectly. It would not suite a normal gamer though. For normal (such as academic or government) users Linux is fine, its very simple unless it breaks. For advanced users who dont know Linux then its hard.

Well lets get back to the topic then. Its a hit and miss, you will have to try it out and see if it works for you. I don't know what hardware you have, but that will make a huge difference to your experience. I hope you have a intel motherboard and a nvidia gfx card with the binary drivers, as that will give you the best shot.

If you have an ati card...I'd say don't even bother because you will have more trouble than luck, even though their drivers are much better nowadays, its still not up to what I want it to be.

a while back i ran wow under linux using cedega. Think it was ubuntu 8.04 on an ATI x1400 mobility (yeah a laptop). To put it short, it runs really well. FPS is a bit lower, but that could of been a laptop thing. Latency is actually lower by a significant amount(anywhere from 20-100, as far as i can remember).

Also google about what are the best settings under linux.

Hmm you've just tempted me to use my webafrica trial to get a distro working again xD

Cedega makes a HUGE difference. You have to pay for it though once your trial is over :(
