I've been playing vanilla wow for a couple of weeks now and was wondering if I shouldn't buy the expansion, what exactly will change? Is it worth getting? What will happen to my character or the story etc?

I ask because I've had bad experiences with expansions in the past, most notably rise of nations where the expansion totally killed the awesome "world domination" feature of the game. I fear that something similar might happen with WOW.

Please advise.

erm? check the wow site and read all the features instead...

At least play the burning crusade if you don't play anything else, the change from vanilla is great. The opening of the dark portal, the defeat of Kael'thas and Illidan etc

What he said ^^. :) For me it was well worth it. But best is you read up on what it adds, because it adds quite a lot to vanilla wow. :)

If you dont keep up the expansions you wont be able to fully enjoy all the end game content (which for most people is where the game begins).

Most people will agree that between Burning Crusade and Wrath of the Lich King, Blizzard drastically improved the game. Oh, sure, some old school purists will claim the opposite, but since the expansions the subscribebase for this game has rocketed.

Burning Crusade adds the ability to play Blood Elves and Draenei, and also play Paladins as Horde and Shamans as Alliance. It adds 10 more levels to the cap, and includes additional content about equivalent to either the Kalimdor or Eastern Kingdoms continents in terms of pure real estate. It adds a LOT of new instances, i think there are more instances in 60-70 Burning Crusade than in all of 1-60 'Vanilla' WoW.

Wrath of the Lich king furthers that by adding another 10 levels, another Kalimdor/Eastern Kingdoms sized continent, a new class (Death Knight) and yet another massive slew of instances to explore.

In short I would say that if you enjoyed 1-60 Vanilla WoW, you will enjoy Burning Crusade and Wrath of the Lich King even more. They fixed a lot, improved a lot, added a lot, and generally speaking there so much to do that even once you hit the level cap at 80 you'll have more than enough to do running heroics, raiding, doing PvP, crafting or whatever floats your boat. And with Cataclysm probably arriving this year, there's not much time to do it.

This!

the vast majority of players will level through lvl 60 now, so only having vanilla might be a bit dull. Lonely etc. I have leveled about 4 characters through lvl 60 to lvl 80 since the last expansion and I probably spent about a week and a bit between lvl 60 and lvl 68. Rarely did any dungeons. My latest lvl 80, hunter, only did deadmines. His next dungeon was Utgarge Keep at lvl 71. Now doing lvl 80 heroics.

With the dungeon finder tool, though, 60-79 means you can and in fact should do as many instance runs as you can. It's good xp, good loot (factor in Satchel of Helpful Goods) to help level, good learning for later on and generally more fun than the solo grind.

Thanks for the replies so far, all are very helpful. So, I'm only lvl 20 at this moment, will getting the expansion make any difference to the game at my current lvl or should I wait until I reach level 60 cap?

Went from 47-69 as resto in 1.5 days, new LFG is the best leveling tool out there ^.^

It makes a bit of a differences. You will be able to play Belf or a Dranei but if you have no interest starting a new character then you can wait. However once you hit level 56-58 you must purchase burning crusade so you can make use of the portal. I'm not sure whether you are restricted to certain professions. If that is the case, buying the expansions helps because you can pick up jewel crafting etc. etc.

Buy now or buy later - buy you will, also you cannot use the best profession ( jewelcrafting ) till you have TBC at least, and inscription requires WOTLK ;)

You can go 1-60 without expansions IF
-you dont mind not playing a blood elf or draenei
-you don't mind not taking jewelcrafting or inscription as tradeskills
-you don't want to make a death knight once you ding 55

imo there's no real need to buy the expansions right away. You can wait to 60 and then see if you still wanna continue.

But chances are, you'll want to. If you've lasted 20 levels and still enjoying WoW, then it's got you by the balls and you'll want to see it through to 80.

I waited a while before getting the expansion - it kinda sucked because I couldn't travel to certain areas. I'd get kicked off the boat if I wanted to go to Exodar etc.
