WOW just got do 150kb/sec

WTF? please don't try and piss me off again... next time I'll leave the forum for good!

Ok, I don't get it?

Had a good giggle at IC though :D

Far too many ppl go over the edge too quick on MyADSL. RPM needs to add to his T&C something like:

Prerequisite: A sense of humour.

My 2c. Which, after Telkom have got hold of it, is worthless.

We are men !! its our right !!! and one more thing - we are south african men !!

Kei how was the weekend mate?

Weekend was good :), how was yours? How was iBurst? iBurst was really good this weekend

As mentioned, a no-holes-barred section is needed on this forum where I can vent my anger at TELKOM....

Hi all - just to get back to topic.
I also want 150kb/s - I have never gone over 100kb/s - avg 20 - 30kb/s sometimes even 1 kb/s.

I understand MTU differs for each B/S - so can anyone tell me what the MTU for Olivedale B/S is - so that I too can enjoy 150kb/s.

Thanks

That's Nothing

Check out my crazy speed test ..

Date: 23/05/2005
Time: 13H35
Download time: 0.14 seconds
Size of file: 500 KiloBytes
Estimated line speed: 29142.9 (kilobits/second)
Estimated line speed: 3571.4 (kiloBytes/second)

it doesn't differ with each base station it differs for each person, MTU is more or less useless with wireless because MTU is calculated at a certain point of time for a particular user but an hour later the packets can fragment at a lower or higher level which is why people with wireless ussually set thier MTU low (as apposed to people with DSL or cable who set it as high as they can to optimise thier packets and therefor speed). So you should probably set your MTU very low to somethign like 1352 which is low enough to ensure packets won't fragment no matter what the conditions are with iBurst.

here's the thing though, unless your packets are heavily fragmented now (which i doubt but it is possible if your MTU is really high, not likely but possible), MTU won't really help you in your quest for speed, you can tweak all you like but all you're gonna do is set it to optimal size for right now but in an hour the rules will change because its so dynamic and at best you'll get a few extra KB/s.

This is what you need to do, obviously the first rule of iurst is find your sweet spot, so get your modem in its optimal position, this don't mean getting 5 LEDs it means getting as high as a signal as you can (check the iBurst Terminal for an exact percentage rather than relying on LEDs which will show 5 LEDs for 80 or 100%) and you want the frame error rate to be as low as you can get it... spend a good 30 minutes or so finding the sweet spot and make sure the connection is active while doing so with either a constant ping (ping -t www.iburst.co.za) or by multithreading a download.

The next thing you want to do is multithread everything, although single threads have been faster for some of us you may not fall into that category so follow the golden rule and multihread everything, set your firefox to open multiple requests per page (they call it pipelining not multithreading if you are going to google) and use download managers such as getright, download accelerator, flashget/got etc

My advise is do it at night, the day times aren't slow now but they can be a bit choppy at times so its best to do it once all the kiddies go to bed if you want optimal performance.

hope that helps

Slim, you been smoking something or what?

Let me re-read just in case I misinterpreted:
"it differs for each person"
"MTU is more or less useless with wireless because"
"MTU is calculated at a certain point of time for a particular user but an hour later the packets can fragment at a lower or higher level which is why people with wireless ussually set thier MTU low"

Eikonna ma-tata!

I have actually ye,

I see what you mean, I didn't mean your MTU I meant your optimal MTU, as in the MTU you come up with whilst tweaking it to optimise your connection for maximum efficiency ie speed.

your optimal maximum transmition unit size, aka the optimalsize of the packet you send for efficiency will be different to mine if you calculated it right now, and if you wait up to a week when iBurst has problems and calculate how high/low it needs to be before it fragments the size will again be different, thats why you set it low, if iBurst was normal broadband we would set it as high as we could but because the optimal value changes so much and for each person I reccomend a standard low MTU of 1352 (or anythign under 1400 should be fine), but setting it to that will not tweak it for speed it will tweak it so it never fragments so you dont ever lose speed, thats what i was getting at.

Havent slept in like 2 days :(

Slim thanks for the advise - just one question - (I'm probably going to sound really stupid now but-) I'm not sure what u mean by check the Iburst Terminal for an exact percentage?

How/Where do I do that?

well you should have an application called the iBurst terminal on your pc, it sits in your system tray with an icon that has the letters iB on it and flashes to show if you send or recieve data, double click it, if its not in your system tray try clicking Start -> All Programs -> iBurst Terminal -> iBurst Terminal UTL

it wont work if you plugged your modem in with an ethernet cable, just USB (not sure about the laptop UTC's but i'm pretty sure it works with those too)

Install the software that (hopefully) came with your modem. If you don't have it, get it from here:
http://www.iburst.co.za/downloads.php#drivers
If it's already installed, it should be living in your system tray somewhere on the right hand side of the screen. (I'm on a mac, so I don't know exactly where). The terminal app gives you a good indication on what your frame error rate is.

Thanks - I am on an ethernet cable at the moment - will find the "sweet spot" using usb.

Thanks for all the help.

outstanding my iburst speeds have been. tweak i did my mtu settings do and since then i have been enjoying great browsing speeds.

www.speedguide.net

but remember mtu is not everything. but i actually took time reading what it does. tcp optimiser can help too.

telkom yields 120KB 90% of the time with international single threads yeilding 50-70KB at a time.

sweet spot is not a myth but just that. a place a modem likes to be.
