The Americans - in addition to already having cheap broadband - are making internet connectivity a tax-free commodity. Isn't that just so damn cool?

WASHINGTON - State and local governments will be barred from taxing connections that link people to the Internet for the next three years under legislation signed Friday by President Bush.

The measure blocks taxation of all types of Internet connections, from traditional dial-up services to high-speed broadband lines.

"I cannot envision any time in the history of our country when it would make sense to be imposing taxes on broadband or the Internet, no matter where one is or who one may be," said Sen. George Allen (news, bio, voting record), R-Va.

The new law, which remains in effect until Oct. 31, 2007, will help ensure that less-affluent Americans can afford Internet access, Allen said. Otherwise, Internet access taxes would average 18 percent, he said.

Wow, I never knew the USA had a previous ban on taxation of internet connectivity, the new law will certainly give Americans an edge over the rest of us.

Pity that this is unlikely to happen in SA anytime soon.

How do I get a Green Card again?
(only kidding)

I oppose this. The Constitution is very clear that unless a right is enumerated in the Constitution, it is reserved for the states. The president and the federal government has no business to tell states what they can tax and cannot tax.

Erm when has the law ever bothered George W? **** if the law bothered him they'd never be in Iraq.

This is a good thing people! Do not diss it. There are national taxation laws that can be forced on states. This is so for economic strategic planning. If this was not so the USA could not be called the UNITED States of America... They are UNITED because they work together...

But they cannot ban the States from levying a tax. That is unconstitutional. I hope it is challenged in court.

Surely the rights of the millions of people outweigh the rights of tax departments of a few states?

Surely each of the states don't just exist to tax people, they are surely there to serve the people that live in respective states?
