Hi everyone. Want to keep this short so its not tl;dr

So I have a 4MB(waiting for 10) WebAfrica Unshaped 6gig option as my home setup.
With my current setup I am fairly happy with my 300ms+-. (
I have tried around 10 ISPs in many different scenarios and WebAfrica is now what I will stick with.
So I looked at other options to get my latency down and a lot of people swear by these
VPN/proxy services. I understand a fair bit of how it works but I want to know firstly is it
worth it, and also how do I go about finding out which one is best for me.
EU-Deathwing is my new realm if that makes a difference. I have done some research but everyone
says their product is better. How do I go about finding the best one for myself? I am someone that enjoys reading and testing so I am not bothered about taking the long route. Any advice is welcome.

Thanks in advance. Hope to hear from you.

Try wtfast.co.za They have a trial account. Makes my latency around 270ms.

300ms is more than decent. The 60-80ms that you may get faster with the Proxy is not necessarily worth the money or risk you take.

I also play on Webafrica without a Proxy, getting around 280-340ms latency. This is more than sufficient for me to do raiding (and have been raiding at the top end for some years). PVP is more than doable, same with Arenas, but you will never be as good as the 40ms latency guys... No proxy in the world will bring you close to that from South Africa ;)

I dont think you can get latency under 250ms afaik.

u can with WA and battleping. regarding proxys. go with good pricing. they all about the same regarding latency. battleping is R35 a month, wtfast is R50 a month, dunno about lower or smooth ping

Thanks for the fast replies. I realize I shouldn't complain with around 300ms but im looking for that little bit more. Apparently its not expensive at all either. Would like to test what its about. Hope to get a reply from someone that can shed some light on this

edit: There are times that I sit at close to 500 and I am hoping this will help/aid in these issues as well

Could I get a screenshot of that or some numbers? AFAIK no matter what due to our geophysical position the time it takes for data to make it there and back is at least 250ms.

My friend stays at Tygerfalls below Tygervalley in Bellville, Cape Town and both of us have seen 200ms. Although all the flats and the business park in that complex are on huge upmarket setup. Definitely not an option for a single home user :)

I'll get him to send me some when he gets some really low numbers :). any advice yet on how to find best option?

I am raiding at 210 ms most of the time... on Bloodhoof I can get it as low as 180 ms. But sadly its only that realm.
Thats with a 4 meg line, Leatrix registry fix done, and a private proxy server... believe it or not, a lot of your crappy latency gets added between your house and your exchange and the amount of users running at your exchange.

There is a lot of factors adding to your latency and gaming experiece, but in general I find the paris hosted servers give me all round better latencies due to the international peering that occurs there.

I will take a screenshot tonight. But i get around 218ms. When im in a raid its about 240, but non raiding its 218-225 easy.

Ok, I have the line and the ISP i want and nothing I can do about the exchange. What else can I do? Leatrix? What else as well? If you are using a proxy please mention their names. Also waiting for my knight in shining armour to tell me the best way to find out which proxy/vpn is better :D

You can try gamepath, lowerping. I would not touch battleping or wtffast. Both gamepath and lowerping have 30min trial accounts which you can test, also lowerping uses your own IP address as opposed to getting their ssh server IP address. Im not 100% sure with gamepath, but i've used it and have not had any issues. Leatrix will just do the tcp/ip change which is fine. Other than that i would not waste money on unshaped accounts, using a normal shaped account is fine due to the fact that SSH is known as a business port and does not usually get shaped

Thanks for all the replies. Got a lot via PM as well. So the question still stands. Whats the best way to find out which will be the better VPN/Proxy for me? Seems like this is a tough one to answer

Test them all ;)

Btw the theoretical minimum is 150ms, that is almost a direct line to Europe with no hops.

there is no best one, they all have pro'd and cons.
they all have different prices.
they all have trial accounts (free) where you can test the service.

and after youve done all of this you will reach no conlclusions.

There are a massive amount of factors involved in getting a packet of data from your network card to the blizzard servers and back.
That traffic can go through more than 50 places in some instances, so just saying oh battleping is best has absolutly no merit.

with all of this you are dealng with a server somewhere in europe which due to the practical physical world we live in will have some sort of capacity (number of users max it can handle)
this figure varies by time of day, day of week, what patch has been released ect ect
this will effect the latency you get.

so it's a lottery.
the advice your looking for is quite clearly stated in the post, try one see if it works for you enough to fork out some cash.
