What do insurance companies do with the cars that they write off.

Do they still get something for the cars, who do they sell the car to, or do they just arrange for it to be squashed into a brick and sent to the junk yard kind of thing.

Many of them are rebuilt and re-sold as a Code 3, if they like to keep their noses clean, many don't even get coded and are happily running around on our roads right now.

Totally trashed ones will end up at a scrap yard, as there's still money to be made on parts.

Salvage auctions, sometimes you can apply to your insurance co to have first right of refusal to purchase your written off vehicle, if you so choose, perhaps it's a vintage collectors vehicle or just an old vehicle with very low retail value and write off value but worthwhile to buy back and have repaired out of your own pocket.

Panelbeaters charge insane rates, just replacing/repairing 2 doors and a front fender perhaps with bumper will right off many cars below R50k despite there being zero damage to the underlying integrated chassis.
