:confused: My 384 service has seemed a bit erratic the last coupla days. I find that Skype is useless, and downloads (even http) are slow.

So I check my speed on Telkom's speed test:

* Download time: 8.765 seconds
* Size of file: 500 KiloBytes
* Estimated line speed: 465.5 (kilobits/second)
* Estimated line speed: 57 (kiloBytes/second)
??? okey dokey...now my speed is higher than 384kbps? Not really what I am experiencing..

So I try Sentech's speed test:
While I am running the test I see my bw graph bouncing around like a kangaroo with crabs....anywhere between 0 and 32kB/s.
Your download speed is: 23.78 KBps, or 190.22 Kbps
The test took 22.5 seconds to complete
??? This is about 50% of telkom's number?

Let's try some international tests:
Stanford:
TCP/Web100 Network Diagnostic Tool v5.3.3e
click START to begin
Checking for Middleboxes . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Done
running 10s outbound test (client to server) . . . . . 63.16Kb/s
running 10s inbound test (server to client) . . . . . . 11.96kb/s
Your PC is connected to a Cable/DSL modem
Information: Other network traffic is congesting the link
??? I can get better speed with a runner and a forked stick!

Broadband Reports:
Yours
«229 down
«183 up
??? So I have 183Kbps upload on a 384/128 line...?

ORNL tcp/web100 test:
TCP/Web100 bandwidth test v4.12
click START to begin
running 10s outbound test... 111 Kbs outbound
running 10s inbound test... 21 Kbs inbound

Web100 Inbound Summary:
Packets to your host: 40 of size 1360 bytes
average RTT: 440.0 ms minimum RTT: 410.0 ms
Maximum Expected Bandwidth: 5 Mbs
Inbound limits:
congestion 100% server: 0% your host: 0%
Bummer!
packets retransmitted: 9 congestion events: 6
Timeouts: 2

Your host's receive buffer: 257040 bytes
Server's send buffer: 89127600 bytes
receive buffer: 2097152 bytes
Buffer sizes are very important in determining
network performance. Larger buffer sizes can
help increase thruput. If your buffer is smaller
than the remote host, you should investigate
increasing your socket buffer sizes.

Web100 reports Tweakable Settings as:
RFC 2018 Selective Acknowledgment: ON
RFC 1323 Time Stamping: OFF
RFC 1323 Window Scaling: ON

TCP/Web100 Network Diagnostic Tool v5.3.3a
click START to begin
Checking for Middleboxes . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Done
running 10s outbound test (client to server) . . . . . 122.41Kb/s
running 10s inbound test (server to client) . . . . . . 34.80kb/s
Your PC is connected to a Cable/DSL modem
???? dial up again?

Is this a general thing, or is it just me? I haven't seen such strange things since I left Sentech.

Is it just me or does this also look slow to you?

TCP/Web100 Network Diagnostic Tool v5.3.3e
click START to begin
Checking for Middleboxes . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Done
running 10s outbound test (client to server) . . . . . 81.26Kb/s
running 10s inbound test (server to client) . . . . . . 14.97kb/s
Your PC is connected to a Cable/DSL modem
Information: Other network traffic is congesting the link
Information: The receive buffer should be 193.39 Kbytes to maximize throughput

As opposed to Telkom's:

Below is the data used to calculate your download speed:

* Download time: 9.172 seconds
* Size of file: 500 KiloBytes
* Estimated line speed: 444.8 (kilobits/second)
* Estimated line speed: 54.5 (kiloBytes/second)

The Web100 tests seem to consistently give strange results...maybe effected by Telkoms shaping? upload seems believable but download is ridiculously slow.

My d/l speed is also fubar. JHB Area.

If it was one or two isolated incidents, I would let it pass, but it seems that more than a few people are having problems...

now the question is... how do we solve this?
