Howdy,

Can someone please explain to me htF a film can access the 'net?

I was watching a DVD on my PC - courteousy of a friend, ie: NOT DOWNLOADED!

The next thing I know I see this script on the film image "property of <movie house>", etc.

I happen to see my PeerGuardian blinking and the next thing I know my PCs lit up with IP addresses linked to the movie house in question.

I don't see any tasks running that look strange.

I never got a chance to run a NetStat though. :(

HtF does a film (.avi) access the 'net?

My anti-virus didn't show up anything either...AVG.

My PG is now set to block HTTP traffic too, as that's where it was coming in.

:o <-- a little freaked.

If you were using Windows Media Player, it connects to the net to download the DVD covers on the play list.

Using VLC.

No applications of mine are allowed to connect to the 'net without my authorization, and only for updates.

Nothing interactive - just the film.

My PG is going nuts with links to all sorts of places.

What in the ****.

OK, I've been doing a lot of reading with regards to PG...

I think what happened is this:

My Torrent app is set to run automatically, but every torrent loaded has been set to 'stop' for months now - bandwidth issues...

I have noticed in the past that even though they are stopped, they still tend to update the Trackers, or do something...not sure what. ;)

Whilst I've had a lot of wierd IPs showing up in PG over the last few minutes, I'm going to go with the general PG consensus that it's simply users on a certain American ISP's network that were hitting up my machine for info' on what's loaded.

Only time will tell, but I'm sure as Hell not watching any more movies anytime soon. :D :o

Just been going through my PG logs...

I keep logs of everything. Sometimes it's good to be "paranoid". ;)

I've had these chaps turn up before, in various incarnations.

Just got freaked when I noticed it in relation to the film script. Hehe.

That said, HTTP block is on full-time now, in addition to a few other toys.

My 'big' firewall is no longer on the To-Do list...it's getting fixed, TOMORROW! :D

*.avi DVD?
another reason why i don't support piracy.

All sounds a bit strange to me.

The software with which you viewed the avi needs to allow specific access from the internet to either the program itself, or the codecs that you use to view the movie with.

Frankly, I have been viewing avi's and DVD's on my PC for years, and I like to play around with the codecs, viewers and settings--and the only place where I have seen "Property of..." is on (hate to admit) leaked / pirated movie releases.

Downloaded avi pre-releases sucks a*s (which you get on the street corners BTW)--rather wait to buy it on DVD proper or watch it in the theatre--Much better quality, much better sound and you enjoy the movie more.

I've got no idea where my mate sourced the film from.

I'm sure as 'ell not loaning any more from him. :D

On my connection I'd be here for a few months trying to download a movie! :o
