WTF?

What is the point of using keys? To stop piracy? Fail on that point.
To give each user a unique identity? Just have the software generate a unique key based on a hardware hash.
I long for the day when we can get past this stupidity.

Won't this just cause a whole lot of fun when you upgrade?

No, I mean the hardware hash is simply used as a randomising factor, it has nothing to do with activation or piracy prevention.
Once the key is generated it is only used for identification purposes, nothing else.

I think StyleXP did this; still required you to email people to get your key though.

But I agree with you, keys are not the solution to the problem.

Once again why dont you then go to BT games, pay, get a CD and a freshly generated CD-Key from them which they obtain from steam or whomever. The Steam allows THAT certain key to be registered within the next 48 hours.

Then Steam can ensure the keys they issue are keys that have been paid for. Why include it in a box?

You see now Steam prints a few million CD-keys and they lie on shelves and wait. Odds are that somewhere the CD-key generator they pirates made will register one of the legit keys on the shelves (as has happened twice with me)....

The key must be generated almost like a prepaid card at the till???/

There is a much better way to do this... pre paid electricity allows you to have a key that expires and ones that are only valid after a certain date. So for new batches they just make new keys that have a current date specified.... so no person could have activated that key before. Also you can have an extra key that is on the box (like for regions) then you have to put in both keys for it to work. Its then impossible for some one to generate that key because they wont know the other key on the box.

Its a bit more complex but will eliminate most of your issues.

Well dude thats basically what I said. Get rid of keys on the shelves and generate new one when buying the game. Read my post again.

Well if the FICA us like I suggested it would sort out some of the problems. All gamers need to verify their address. So then they will think twice about stealing a serial..........

Also if piracy can stop period we can expect possible price drops in games?

Won't help if someone on the other side of the globe used a keygen to spit out a key which is more likely to be the case here, or does Top-CD actualy allow games to be returned for refund/swap ?

Hi guys

I only recently got full-time internet. Now here is my problem. THe first 2 games I have bought's serials was already "taken" by some other idiot? For example:- GTA4 episodes from liberty city says that its serial have already been registered by another user. So now I cannot play. I need to contact the "windows live" guys who wants me to send proof of purchase etc.

The exact same thing happened with steam last week. I purchased an original game in Top CD. Once I tried to install it, steam said I was duplicating an already existing game. Long and short is that I took me 25 emails, about 5 hours and some frustration + anger management to get the game working 10 days later!!!!

It seems that you need to buy a game as soon as it is released, install and register in order to ensure that your copy is still yours................

My issue is that the honest guy is getting all the crap whilst the pirate on the street is playing GTA and some other games on MY ACCOUNT.

Worst part is that I asked steam to tell me who the hell this other guy is that "stole" my cd-key and they do not respond to that. No one is doing anything. I will also consider piracy for all offline games if this is the way things are going..........

Thats why i don't buy games from incredible connection or look and listhen.. both of them take the cd's out of the case and leave the cd-key in there.. for other ppl to get.. my advice is order games online from take2 or btgames.
