Why do people accept speedtest as the definitive benchmark?

What would you recommend thats better or will give more reliable information? My connection normally shows that my international speed on SpeedTest is really bad but downloads are perfectly fine. Also, my speed to the FutuBox servers are also really slow for whatever reason.

I've found speedtest to not always be accurate. I just wget files (about 50MB) from local (tenet.ac.za) & international (mirror.org.uk) servers to see what's really happening and the speeds i get on those are usually higher than from speedtest.
