Would love to know what to expect before I spend R2000 on equipment and start climbing up my roof. Guess it's just a chance I have to take?

You won't be disappointed.

However you will be very disappointed if spend ~R2000 and you wouldn't be able to connect at all. Do a site survey before buying any equipment!

Oh and wuggers (in CT anyways) are a friendly bunch of guys it happened more than once that someone knocks at my door asking about the wug. I'm sure a jhb wugger wont mind showing off his kit and showing you what is going on on the network try contact them through the forum or irc.

Well I got speeds from 10kbps up to 3MBps, depends on where you are and where you are downloading from. I would say its worth the money if you don't want to use ADSL to download

WUGs are about communities of people who are interested in building networks and learning from their experiences. Your question makes it sound like you're not interested in any of that.

Join because you want to learn, not because you're only interested in downloading everything.

That's just BS.
I've heard it plenty of times from Wug members.
The truth of the matter is some of us want to connect to play games/etc, and not because we are interested in "router equipment".

Everyone can join for whatever reason they want, it's an open initiative after all.

Hi Mweb,
Please could you email me a list of website that I will be able to reach before I will sign up with your Internet service.
Thanks.

The WUGs are networks, they have no content. You'll need to speak to the people who serve content on the WUGs to find out what they have :)

You obviously know more than I do about WUGs.

afaik you are pretty involved in WUGs, and i'm sure you spend a lot of time on routers, receivers and other magafters.

But you cannot deny that for the average joe (the other 99%), they spend a LOT more time downloading and playing games, than installing the hardware.

installing takes all of what, 1 day? 2 days?
how long does it take you to set hardware up man? :p

I was one of them people who just joined wug to download. I used to be the most irritating person on irc. Then I got into the networking of things and how it all worked. Because of Jawug, I have the job that I do at the moment.

So Jawug is not just about downloading, its about learning, getting to know one another and having fun. You will always get people that are just on the network to download, but the network is there to learn.

That was in the old days when it was a technical challenge to get connected. After we (the real wuggers) worked out all the issues and got everything to run smoothly it became so easy to join the wug that just about anyone can get connected.

Now we sit with gamertjies and leechertjies that complains about the smallest thing without having a clue about what i took to put this network together.

The wug was build on love, love for technology and experimenting.

I think dade summed it up "The wug was build on love, love for technology and experimenting. "

But its not all geek, all of us on wug joined wanting something from wug and then once we connected we looked at ways to get others connected sense on community. If we all connected only to think about our selves we'd have 2 nodes ..

your experience on wug is what u mwant it to be, if u connect and don't give a damn don't try to improve ya connection etc etc .. thats all it will be to you. I connect get involved even on the gaming side the experience will be great for you.

Wuggers are a friendly bunch, come chat to us on irc and where possible we will help where we can ..

just remember is not an Install and walk away thing .. you are your 1st line of tech support :)

and hope to see you wugged soon!

on this topic, I wanted to join a while ago but had no one close enough (los issues too). I tried to check today but it seems the link for the wug plotter on the site is dead. the kmz file on wug.za.net did not help much

EDIT: nevermind, got the kmz file working

It's fine if people who want to learn networks/etc want to join, and if they learn stuff - great!

but there is nothing wrong with other people because they aren't into all that geeky stuff...

Most people I know get connected to ADSL not for the installation, but for what comes after....like downloading, or Gaming.
imo its the same for the majority of WUG users.
