Can anyone tell me how to flash this unit to play copied games? I know it can be done at certain flea markets for a fee but surely it can be done without having to pay someone. I heard that all you have to do is flash the unit with some software.

Thanks

Marine rather just dont go that way. I mean someday you will want to play on Xbox live and with a modded console you wont be able to.

You need a SATA PCI card with a specific chipset. You open the XBox and remove the DVD drive and connect it to the card and download and merge the firmware with the current one. Then upload or flash the drive with the new firmware

Cost of a game :R400
cost of XBOX: R3500

so, for 9 games you can buy a new XBOX.

While I am not condoning the piracy, it does not make financial sense to not flash it on the off chance you may want to use XBOX live - especially given the shocking internet in SA.

Chipped, flashed, F/W upgrade, Modded or whatever.... He gets onto LIVE....

I imagine it makes a difference.

Thinking to playstation, the chip "injects" the security code normally found on the disk, and the BIOS is untouched.
Flashed implies a BIOS rewrite.

In the case of the BIOS rewrite, the BIOS checksum will differ, therefore no LIVE.

A guess, but I may be right.

Even with a chipped Xbox you would need the orginal game to play on Live.

There is a diff between a chipped console and a firmware updated console, the chip can be switched off easily, whcih allows access to Live, whereas the firmware needs to be flashed back to the original, which is a more tedious process.

Both will however void your warranty, so if you are going to attempt this, make sure its either out of warranty or you don't mind losing a few grand.
