MKV is arguable a better container as you have more options with it when it comes to compatible codecs and embedded subtitle streams.
MP4 is better for compatibility though.

If so then why did they just randomly switch series from .mp4 to mkv?
No, nothing to do with quality.
Ask the guys doing the encodes. It's likely a personal preference and it's better for subtitles as you don't have to have a separate subtitle file.
Just use Plex and you don't have to worry about formats.![]()
I understand x265 is meant to be MKV but whats the reason they are now containing x264 content in .mkv?
There was nothing wrong with .mp4 and x264.
I remember people being furious when they changed from XviD .avi to x264 .mp4, this time it's just the container changing.

I dont mind .mkv, but there was absolutely nothing wrong with .mp4 in the first place.
