x264 but its .MKV?

I understand x265 is meant to be MKV but whats the reason they are now containing x264 content in .mkv?

There was nothing wrong with .mp4 and x264.

I hate .mkv as I have to convert for ATV whereas I can just rename mp4 to m4v.

.mkv is merely a container, it would take you less than 2 minutes to remux a 5GB file from .mkv to .mp4

MKV is arguable a better container as you have more options with it when it comes to compatible codecs and embedded subtitle streams.

MP4 is better for compatibility though.

I'm sure you can put just about anything in a MKV container.. probably old AVI files

No, nothing to do with quality.

Ask the guys doing the encodes. It's likely a personal preference and it's better for subtitles as you don't have to have a separate subtitle file.

But the current series that are in mkv dont have subtitles anyway.

I never check my file extensions until this thread and I now see as of two weeks ago they went from .mp4 to .mkv, the only reason I can think they did this is they can use the same settings for movie and TV encodes and embedding subtitles.

Just use Plex and you don't have to worry about formats.

I also prefer .mp4 as it plays on ps3 but mkv does not. I noticed that some of the series are now in .mkv but followed instructions to convert it to .mp4. Its a simple process but its a pain though.

I dont mind .mkv, but there was absolutely nothing wrong with .mp4 in the first place.

xvid.avi was terrible by comparison to x264.mp4...this change seems more about convenience when releasing than anything else.

Not against it...I prefer mkv because it's more flexible. If I didn't have a Roku and HTPC though, I would have a gripe as my previous 2012 Samsung TV didn't manage mkv directly...my 2014 Samsung doesn't mind mkv's.

They probably just decided it's easier to change it now when a lot of the current seasons are ending and new seasons beginning, now everything you can possibly download from 4K to SD will be .mkv across the board.
