Support for hardware-assisted media encoding tailored for Quick Sync is widely available. Your software will activate the on chip coding. Like I said, I use VLC and it automatically activates the feature. I do not need to convert media files, but have used Free MP4 Video Converter. Very quick. You can easily see if the feature actually work with Task Manager. Using Task Manager -Performance - Resource Monitor. You will see that your CPU cores will be evenly matched and not Maxing out. The same applies to your RAM usage (very important to have enough of this to assist coding and encoding. If your mother board have supporting software, you will not have major temp spikes. I hope this helps you. Handbrake is IOS sentric software and I have left it behind as clumsy and long winded. I love Hackentoshing and on that platfom it flies.

and it does support IQS - but how do I tell if it's activated ?

If you haven't figured it out, in Handbrake under the video tab you can choose H.264 (Intel QSV).

You have to enable the onboard GPU in bios and then it should show up in Handbrake.

Test it out and let us know...I found Quick Sync encoded files looked worse for the same file size than CPU encoded ones.

Granted I've only used it a handful of times converting Xvid to x264 and it looked exactly the same as using CPU encoded files, when is the last time you tried it?
 
Yes, it will result in lower quality encodes. CPU is the way to go if you want high quality files.

For HD you definitely want CPU, I only used it with small Xvid SD files and, to me at least, it looked exactly the same.

Oh, it was well after xvid was a thing...was using it for DVD and bluray conversions to x264.
 
Install ShanaEncoder and under setting choose - Copy - Stream Copy to MP4 or MKV depending on which you want to change to the other.

Side note before you do this you might want to go into parameters and remove "Prefix filename".

Edit: Just to make sure I wasn't lying about the time I just remuxed a 580MB mp4 to mkv at an average of 6300FPS and it took maybe 8 seconds.
