Hey

Anyone try the not so new x265 video format ?

Trying to watch samples but i see that this new codec is CPU hungry some peeps saying that its using all 8 cores at 58%.

So have you had any experience trying to play it. As it stands this does not play on most players yet as well as XBMC.

What CPU do you have?

I didn't know there were any videos to test out yet? Anyway I was under the belief that the standard has not been finalised yet. When it is they will start manufacturing chips designed to handle it, same as it is today with the x264 codec. Unfortunately we may have to bin some electronics, especially any off the shelf media players.

I just tried a 720p 1280x720 AVC+AAC 4994kbps sample video and it plays just fine on a 2005 single core celeron m laptop, cpu usage 65-80%

SFW007 if you have a link to a sample file post it so we can all compare with the same thing.

VLC for example has already added support as far as I know.

I see x265 files are rather large at the moment. Is this simply because the codec isn't finalised yet, or is this the way it works? Will x265 files now be twice the size of x264 files?

They should be around half the size of x264 for the same quality.

Perhaps the files I saw were HD then? But that's good to know, thanks...

The sooner it gets adopted the better.

I also can't wait for Google to fully rollout vp9 on youtube.
