Was wondering on whether anybody had any thoughts on whether the prices for x58 mobo's and i7 CPU's would be coming down any time soon. I have been watching various distributor pricelists for a while now and prices have remained pretty much level for the past 3 months odd.

What do you guys/gals think of the chances of a price drop before November? Think i am being overly optimistic at a 10-20% drop :p?

Sure hope that's the case. Would cause a huge shift in the entire CPU market. AMD would have to drop their price too!! Not so sure about the mobo's though.

I'd say it's likely... maybe not 20% but 10% would be awesome!!!!! Maybe then I might even consider an i7 system.

I also noticed that AMD didn't even budge in their pricing at the distributors when the i5 arrived. The only change in AMD pricing was when the 955BE dropped in price when the 965BE arrived.

Any change in i5/i7 pricing will hopefully trigger a AMD price drop. But I don't think I can wait that long.

To be perfectly honest the i7-920 CPU price I can understand... would even go so far as to say they are very well priced, but the motherboards are a whole different ball game. I mean, come on. 2k minimum for a motherboard (absolute bottom of the line mobo) is taking it a little too far.

It's the premium mobo/cpu combo that's why it's expensive. If you can't afford it there's still Q9550 and 775 boards that are reasonable.

Suppose everyone will complain the ram is expensive as well.

Ye, i7 is the premium option so it's supposed to be more expensive. i5 will just slot in the AMD price bracket and i7 will remain a high end solution.

You are missing the point bud, I am not complaining it is expensive, in fact i am not complaining at all. What i was asking is if people thought the wholesale prices were going to drop any time soon as for the past few months they have remained relatively stagnant and in some case the prices even went up. This is just not the norm, especially sisnce there was an intel price drop on CPU's fairly recently with the introduction of the D0 stepping.

For the record... DDR3 ram is dirt cheap. Even R2200 is friggin cheap for 6GB of the stuff. Just 1-2yrs ago it would have cost 3-5k for midrange-highend DDR2 1066 4GB. Here is a great set of Ram sticks for R1800 http://www.ikonicit.co.za/index.php?target=products&product_id=820

Juggy i had 2 gb of the cheapest ddr 2 memory from sahara dude, i put in 2 gb memory of expensive ddr 2 which cost me nearly 800 bucks for 1gb as opposed to 350 from sahara back in the day and i will be honest i noticed 0 difference.

In my opinion memory is memory, some are just marketed to make you think that is it better when in reality it is not worth the extra cash.

2GB DDRIII-1800 Hyper X (Kingston) R 599 excl. R 682 incl. Damn that is cheap in my opinion.

Hold the damn phone. R2000 for a motherboard is pricey but R2200 for ram is fine???

WOW, the base of any decent machine is a) PSU and b) motherboard and not necessarily in that order.

2k for the absolute bottom of the pile mobo is not fine IMO. 2k for 6GB of DDR 1600 low latency sticks is definately well priced (this is fairly high end and decent ram). If you want cheaper ram then there are other options, heck you can pick up 2GB of the stuff for about R500.

And for interested sake... my phone is not damned, i am failry certain it has a place in heaven one day :P

Lol, my point is that i7 is meant to be high end that's why i5 has come out. Bottom end of the 1156 range will cost you the following

i5 750 - R2200
2x1GB 1333 XMS3 - R700
ASUS P7P55D LE - R1700

That's R4600 basically. The basic entry for i7 1366 would cost at least 2k more.

I understand this concept thanks.

What I am asking is why the "expected" price drop hasn't occured in SA yet on the lower end of the X58 mobo's and i7 CPU's, are the prices just over inflated to try keep the "market entry inflated" i5 in the right "price bracket" and are going drop once the i5's start to drop in a couple months?

Usually the prices from online stores like newegg, tigerdirect, etc are about on par with the wholesale prices in SA, which at the moment is not the case with regards to the mobo's (CPU's are close). I find this odd actually, especially in light of the strong rand/dollar exchange rate coupled with intel's fairly recent price drop.

The overseas prices have never been close to ours. We all know we get screwed royally here not matter what happens in the overseas market.

Why should it be any different? Also lets consider that i5 has just been released, if any price adjustments are going to happen we'll see them in 6 months.

When the i7 920 came out it was ±R3300 ex VAT. It is now ±R2300 ex VAT...

Yes, but that price drop is normal for new on the market items, they are always over inflated and occured prior to the recent intel price drop. Also you need to take in to account the increase in "rand" strength since then

USA online retailer prices have been close to our Wholesale incl vat prices for a while now. I agree that they have never been close to retail SA prices, but are usually fairly close to our Wholesale incl vat prices.
