I have the above mentioned card and am getting blocking in first person shooters.

All other games work fine though, I have a feeling it's to do with the fast rendering of the graphics.

Does anyone know of a fix?

I have a 4400 AMD dual core with 2GB memory.

hmmm, explain blocking...

do you mean, some objects render as blocks?

It's hard to describe but basically things like flames render correctly. Everything else appears like really big blocks or pixels that float around. You also get long lines that stretch across the screen.

hmmmm, ok. another question and then a statement:
on which games do these anomalies occur?

i still have a x850xt pe in my old pc, and i experienced some weird stuff as well, which prompted me to upgrade. for me it was a problem with shader model 3 (SM3). games that required SM3 as a minimum either wouldn't launch or was unplayable because my card didn't know what to do with some textures. the x800 series and any AMD card below only supports shader model 2.0b, while the equivalent nVidia cards already supported SM3

Very interesting, the games are as follows.

Bioshock doesn't work while Doom 3 does.

Doom3 ran on pretty high settings on my 6600gt...
Bioshock is a fairly new game & pretty resource intensive from what I understand

my pleasure sir :) you are in the same boat i was in a year or so ago, so you lucky that i was able to help (been there done that)

if i may recommend: if you have some spare cash floating around, have a look on the prophecy forums and regularly check the classifieds section. theres some REALLY good deals going down there on people selling older graphics cards (i assume cause they are buying the new ATI cards hehehe). saw some schweet deals for R1000 which will get you a card much more up to date than the old x850 and even newer than my current graphics card :p

EDIT: some examples
9800GTX @ R2200 (not BAD as such, but i would rather get the ATI 4850 for the same price)
2900XT @ R1000 (this is what i currently have by the way, only i paid WAY more)
3870x2 @ R2000 (this is GOOD, check out tomshardware for performance comparisons with current generation graphics cards)

Those prices are very good.

I remember when I bought this card they were going for around R4500. Nasty price to pay back in the day.

A new 9600gt will set you back around R1500 nowadays.
But that 9800GTX looks real pretty :)

Or even an 8800GT for around R2000
