For portable use here is some background on the Android version: http://kodi.wiki/view/Android_FAQ
BTW XBMC is now called Kodi.
I realise many people run XBMC / Kodi / Openelec / RaspBMC off a Pi, but my experience was not good. Very slow and unresponsive and I just gave up in the end. My main Openelec media centre is a plain old pc booting off a flash drive with openelec on it, stock mainboard, Core2 Duo and 2 Gb ram. 2 Tb mechanical HDD for media. Runs well.
Not very power efficient though.
Yes there are some good little Android devices but you can install Kodi on any laptop or pc running Windows, Ubuntu or Apple Mac.The Droid MXIII. Powerful little Android box, there is an entire thread on these types of devices: http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php/596615-The-Droid-TV-thread
I have 2 HP microservers that I run it on. I have a pi that I play around with but its too slow for me to be a good kodi device.
I would like to try the android devices they look like the best compromise but I have no reason to buy one as even my oldest 1.3 dual core MS is plenty fast enought.
I installed gt210 video cards in them for the hdmi ports. What is the method of video output ? Do you use an HDMI convertor ?
