Hi again,

I'm looking for a good remote control (remote + USB receiver) for XBMC. I'm busy setting up an HTPC and at first considered using Windows Media Center (with the Media Browser plugin) but after testing XBMC for a bit, I DEFINITELY want to use that instead.

There are some pretty good Windows Media Center remotes out there, I've been looking at the Compro K300 in particular. Question is, is there something similar you can use with XBMC? (It'll run on a Windows platform).

Any advice?

(Yes I have looked at the thread at http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php/347288-HTPC-Controller - but I couldn't find a specific model that would work. Apart from the XBMC remote itself, that is).

I would also not mind getting a solution. ATM I am using an Xbox 360 controller at my girlfriends to control my Media Center I set up there (XBMC). It works, but it could be much better.

If you have an Android phone... get the XBMC Remote App for Android.
Theres also one for iPhone.

Been using the Droid one for over a year and its the s**t. :D

Hi

I recently set up my XBMC pc at home,
I bought a logitech Harmony 300i remote from ZAPs online, but it does not come with an infrared censor, so I bought a 2nd cheap remote from Zaps as well, think it was the K300 as well, the cheaper one was out of stock, just to get the usb-ir dongle.
or you can build one yourself for less than R50 if you still have a serial port pm me if you need the info.
i loaded EventGhost as well, it can map any infrared event the dongle picks up to A LOT of functions on the pc, and has a set of commands for XBMC as well.

yeah, it took a while to set everything up, but atleast i have only 1 remote now, handling evertyhing , the tv, audio, and xbmc

I also bought the K300. Like vaalpens, I eventually bought a harmony. You can setup your harmony remote as a mce keyboard, so you can map just about any command from the harmony software.

Heads up to people with a K300 receiver. The plastic casing around the the receiver screws up the infrared reception. If you remove the casing, it will look dog ugly, but it picks up the remote from just about anywhere in the room :)

Rather go for the Hauppauge MCE remote than for the Compro K300. I bought one that was faulty right of of the box and then the second one was faulty as well. The Hauppauge is a better, higher quality remote, even if you plan on just using the IR reciever with a universal remote.

And remeber to install the MCE remote plugin of course.

As per my signature, i have the K300 and im really not happy, you literally have to be in front of the IR receiver or it wont pick up
i bought one of these 2 days back http://forum.esquire.co.za/index.php?page=specials
its better, but that bloody trackball irritates me, sometimes it does not want to go where i want it to go, it just goes left and right or up and down, it comes right if you lose your temper and klap it..:D
but try staying away from IR, Wireless and Bluetooth are much better option

hehe, thanks for the tip Nuro

luckily mine is already bouncing off the walls with the covers on :P
but yeah, just bought the k300 for the receiver :)

You could also use something like this, which fit into a 3.5" bay and then use your harmony. It connects to your motherboard which means you can turn the PC on with your remote.

Would the dstv pvr remote be able to use this you think?

I have my htpc behind the wall my TV is attached to, so it's sitting on a shelf in my garage.
A hole in the wall is where the wireless receiver for Logitech keyboard and mouse comes through.

I would like a remote type deal - Hauppauge with usb ir receiver seems ok.

Hope it will work with XBMC?

Hi Hemps

the Antec looks like it should work, if it works on the same frequencies as standard remotes, if its for IRDA (data transmitting) then it might not work.
but EventGhost can capture any events on both and map it to a windows keystroke, xbmc command, vlc, quite a few plugins and 3rd party supported apps :)
If you load EventGhost you should be able to map the DSTV remote to whatever you want to do :)

thats why i bought the k300 remote just for the receiver, R200 from ZAPS, they have a cheaper remote (R74), but they were out of stock at that time.
