Hi Guys,

I tried to assign a static ip address to my htpc but I think I messed up the machine. I logged into the router, added the MAC address of the htpc and assigned the desired ip address. I tried to connect to the machine via my browser but was unable to.

I then went into the openelec settings and tried to set a static ip there but I still could not access the htpc via the browser. I changed everything back to default and I removed the MAC address and static ip from the router yet I am still unable to access the machine.

When I ping the machine I get a reply from the static ip I want. The machine is running through a switch to the router.

Any suggestions? I would really like to have a static ip address because everytime the htpc is started, it has a new ip address which I need to connect to.

Hope someone can help me with this.

Thanks

By the sound of things you have configured a static ip - hence you are able to ping it. IIRC openelec doesn't have default html access so you won't have any luck trying to connect via your browser.

But I could do it before this morning. I now can't access sabnzbd, sickbeard etc through my other computer.

Go to system info and see what ip it does have. If you are able to ping the address it might be that another device on your network is already using that address.

Will do that. What if there is another device using that ip address?

Edit: nothing else is using the same ip.

Ok. I'm at my computer now, so no more short posts from the cellphone...

First thing is to go to system info and see whether your HTPC has the desired IP. If no, then check the configuration settings on Openelec. You've already checked that no other device is using that particular IP.

If yes, then all I can think of is that your pc and HTPC are not on the same subnet. They should have identical IP's, bar the last three digits (ie 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2 or something similar).

Nope, they are on the same subnet. I have not yet restarted the router since I tried adding a static ip.

In that case, restart the router and then, once it is booted up, restart everything else.

The restart always works!!! Thanks for the help. Now onto the next problem, if I may.

How do I set the htpc box to have a static ip?

I thought you'd just done that?

You do that in your router. Login to your router, identify the HTPC connected. Somewhere in your router setting will be the option for static IP. Just set the static IP to the MAC address of the connected HTPC and save.

Restart everything...

I did that earlier and I could not connect to the htpc after that. But I have to say that I only restarted the htpc after that, not the router. Will try again.

Another option is to set the static IP under system settings on Openelec.

Yeah, sorry for only getting back to you now. I added the static ip in the router and all is working now.

Thanks for the help.

I don't want to start a new thread but I have another problem now since yesterday. My machine refuses to shutdown or reboot. When I select either of the options the machine just freezes. When I hold in the power button it will switch off but the blue HP light will still be on.

If I startup the machine again and then try to shut down, same thing happens. Anyone have an idea what this could be?

I am running the latest openelec version on the N40L.

Thanks
