XBMC vs Plex

I don't have the plex client on my Samsung TV... Where do I find / download it?
I have the UA46ES6200

And set to USA region for the app choices...

Have you tried using a VPN or a DNS service like Unotelly or Unblock-US which spoof your location?

Yes, use unotelly.. Works great for streaming from my Netflix account via my Samsung 3D Bluray player, but no plex client in sight...

That is a great buy, I paid R10999 - but also got the 3D Bluray player, 6x pair of 3D glasses and 3x 3D movies as part of the deal.

The tv is awesome for PS3 Gaming as well as watching downloaded media content...

If you have the Samsung App Store on your TV you can download the Plex app.
No App Store, no Plex.

I use the Samsung BD-D5500 for Plex in the lounge. No DNS, no VPN. It is not region based

No, I'm afraid not... Just checked and the latest models in 2012 are not supported as yet.

I have the UA46ES6200 tv and the BD-E5500 Bluray player.

Will have to be patient for a little longer...

latest version for E series tv submitted today. normally takes a week for an answer.

Posted Today, 12:51 AM
We submitted version 0.987 to Samsung. They will still need to retest some things and check if we can pass the "A" type defect with this fix.

v 0.987 - 2012-11-15
- [FIXED] - Player - App could get stuck in deadlock state. FF/RW will no longer switch direction instantly but will now act like +/-
- [FIXED] - Preferences - Plex Media Server could not be detected when there were too many invalid servers in the list
- [FIXED] - Main - Background images would not always update to match the correct section
- [UPDATED] - Player - FF and RW are now limited to 16X speed because some older models can not handle 32X correctly
- [NEW] - Preferences - Added option to disable all menu animations and fade effects to help speed up slow devices
- [UPDATED] - ALL - Scrolling text would fade on irregular intervals

you can follow the progress here. these guys sure a put a lot of their time into this. really appreciated.

good news. e series app passed. should be available to all within two weeks. yay

We are proud to announce that version 0.987 has passed for all models (including 2012) and is waiting for launch.!!
You will still have to wait while Samsung updates the App Store for your country. Give them 1-2 weeks to do so, so be patient

What does that give you extra?

Immediate benefit was multiple instances of the server on the same network.

Feature I found was worth the cash is the ability to sync items from the collection for offline use on your mobile device SBD still get the same Plex experience.

Then getting early access to new features - bonus.

Some other stuff too but not significant enough for my lazy brain to try recall :D

Can someone please explain to me how this works (in simple terms)? I currently have 3 XBMC installations in my house that all run off a central media box. How is Plex any different? I don't understand how I could those tis could possibly receive this data without having XBMC installed on each machine, which is the inference I get from the advantages of Plex.

Can someone explain how this might work? Also, would plugins like the MQ4 skin and Supersport work on Plex too?

Plex is built on the concept of having one machine to be the server for multiple clients. You can do this on XBMC, but it requires that you manually configure a MySQL database on the host machine and is not for noobs.

If you are running a bunch of different XMBC machines without a mySQL database, then it is not centralised because each time it searches for media information (artwork, synopsis, etc) it will go on the internet and store all that data on each client machine that requests it. This is what Plex does so well, everything gets done on the server and then all clients get data from the server.

Set up is very nice and simple too and if your network is set up properly each client you connect will just automatically detect the server and you will immediately have your media.

Great features include:

- Mobile apps (iOS, Android, etc) so you can stream from the iPad or whatever tablet/phone you have.
- Remote streaming means you can access your media server from anywhere in the world and stream your media (pretty useless here with SA internet though).
- Lots of other goodies, but my tea is getting cold so I'm off.

Only downside is no Linux client app, but there is a Linux server app though.

No Supersport plugin unfortunately, they work on a different channel system (but I haven't yet actually looked if it is similar to the python scripts XBMC uses). Skins are also doable, just not as streamlined or robust as XBMC yet. Yet being the operative word as these devs are always bringing out something new and awesome.

Off to get my tea!

So I still need a PC of sorts at each machine to use Plex? Well the upside is minimal for me. I use the main media box to scan for metadata and then export the library to individual files. My other client machines then update when I switch on and receive all of the new content. Considering its all wireless in the house at the moment, I like the fact that it stores all the metadata locally as it speeds it up (I'm assuming). The downside of no SuperSport and minimal skin support seals the deal for me though, so I'll stick with XBMC for now. Its also an Openelec machine (the central server) so that speeds things up too...
