Can someone please explain to me how this works (in simple terms)? I currently have 3 XBMC installations in my house that all run off a central media box. How is Plex any different? I don't understand how I could those tis could possibly receive this data without having XBMC installed on each machine, which is the inference I get from the advantages of Plex.
Can someone explain how this might work? Also, would plugins like the MQ4 skin and Supersport work on Plex too?
Plex is built on the concept of having one machine to be the server for multiple clients. You can do this on XBMC, but it requires that you manually configure a MySQL database on the host machine and is not for noobs.
If you are running a bunch of different XMBC machines without a mySQL database, then it is not centralised because each time it searches for media information (artwork, synopsis, etc) it will go on the internet and store all that data on each client machine that requests it. This is what Plex does so well, everything gets done on the server and then all clients get data from the server.
Set up is very nice and simple too and if your network is set up properly each client you connect will just automatically detect the server and you will immediately have your media.
Great features include:
- Mobile apps (iOS, Android, etc) so you can stream from the iPad or whatever tablet/phone you have.
- Remote streaming means you can access your media server from anywhere in the world and stream your media (pretty useless here with SA internet though).
- Lots of other goodies, but my tea is getting cold so I'm off.
Only downside is no Linux client app, but there is a Linux server app though.
No Supersport plugin unfortunately, they work on a different channel system (but I haven't yet actually looked if it is similar to the python scripts XBMC uses). Skins are also doable, just not as streamlined or robust as XBMC yet.
Yet being the operative word as these devs are always bringing out something new and awesome.
Off to get my tea!
