Xbox 360 confirmed at $299.

you forgot the duties, postage, packing and insurance... i still want to see how much will it cost at Animeworx at Brightwater commons, thats were i got my Xbox from...

True useless.

None the less, my bank balance can only bend so far and i'm sure the PS3 is going to take it too the limits. Going to sit out the XBOX 1.5 ;)

I can only imagine what the PS3 is going to cost when it launches ....... shudder ....

R5000 ? R6000 ?

i think since Sony has the console market under its control in SA it will launch the PS3 at a reasonable price, all the console makers make their profits mostly from software/game sales... its now Sony's turn to actually lose money in the PS3 unit as MS was with the Xbox... buy heck, these boys have way too much money anyways so why do we worry? :P

I've been a PC gamer all my life, from the days of Space Quest 1 and Sopwith, etc. My current PC is an AMD64 3000+, 1 gig of RAM, 320Gb HDD SATA, X800 Pro. A decent gaming machine by any standards. I got an Xbox last november, plugged it into my 84cm TV with Logitech 5.1 Z680's running dolby. The ONLY PC game I have looked at since Half Life 2 is Dungeon Siege 2, and that didn't last long. The games on xbox are simply breathtaking. The lesson I've learnt is that, while my PC is FAR superior to my xbox, it doesn't mean a damn thing without the games. Halo 2, Jade Empire, Fable, Forza and a ton of other exclusive IP.

You can debate as much as you like about the hardware capabilities of both machines, but at the end of the day, it's all about the GAMES. As a PC gamer, you lose sight of that. You get caught up in the hardware rush, running things at 1600x1200 4xAA and 16xAF, and that's that. Microsoft are going to have one seriously KILLER lineup of games for the 360, and while I feel Sony will too, I can't help but feel that in that department, Microsoft is king. Add xbox live to the equasion, which has been proven to be hugely successful, and you have a winning package.

It's not about who's e-penis is bigger, it's all about the games.

EDIT: By the way, the Killzone demo was NOT real.. it's a "representation" of the game they're "trying" to make.

thanks munwaal for putting the GAMER into perspective... there is just too much of a rush for more powerful PC's and GFX cards... just for more AA and AF... sigh... game developers are loosing touch with the people they design games for, now its just for BIGGER and NICER games... playability, fun and innovation have taken a back step... lets see if something arises from the next-gen consoles...

Although PC upgrading is expensive, I find it "exciting" when I upgrade my PC...I know my gameplay experience will improve. Also I would get "bored" of seeing the same type of graphics for 4-5 years. Furthermore, game developers only reach the consoles "true" capability @ the end of the life (God Of War ;) ).

Also you can do so much more on the pc..set-up a website, change the Windows GUI, VoIP etc.

PS: Bringing up the point of Xbox Live is pointless in this country since hardly anyone can access it (you need an unshaped account)

err... you can surf via the PSP.. and MS will try to push the Xbox 360 as a media center too... VOIP is active on Xbox LIVE for a whole range of games too... and you can even get the Linux kit for the PS2 in the US... heck, even the Eyetoy can be used for webcam via the PS2!

basically the consoles are PC's dedicated for games... and they can do what most PC's also do... almost everything... :)

Spoken like a true PC gamer! :p

While upgrading your machine is exciting, it's also very expensive. My X800 cost more than my xbox. I was in the habit of buying the latest and greatest card anually, but of late, the number of good games coming out has been dropping steadily.

As for getting bored of the graphics - it doesn't happen. If anything, PC games graphics are boring. Not all games (before you flame me!), but look at something like Dungeon Siege 2. All it is are hi-res textures. Now look at Jade Empire. Sure, it's not hi-res, but look at the environments.. they're alive. Smoke and dust, awesome, artistic use of lighting.. the creativity on a console far exceeds what you typically find on a PC today. The graphics don't "look the same". I find myself constantly surprised by what they're able to do with the xbox.

Then there are other factors.. like lying in bed, having a big TV and surround sound.. as apposed to sitting hunched up in front of a 19 inch. The gaming experience on a console far exceeds anything you can get on a PC, unless you hook up your TV out and use it like a console.

Then there's the games.. it's not all first person shooters and strat games. The console is the platform where developers will try new things (psychonauts, etc), as apposed to PC using the same formula over and over again.

It all depends on what you want out of your games. For years, I wanted to be wowed by awesome graphics, and while there is definately satisfaction in that, for me, there's far more satisfaction in playing an awesome game, with an awesome story and awesome artwork, as apposed to AA and AF (just look at Doom 3..!).

Consoles never really interested me that much. If you have a braai with a couple of friends and have a game of Tekken or something it's great but other than that, it's just not for me. I'm a FPS player, I tried playing some FPS games on the console but I missed the precision of a mouse. I also have to have my online gaming. Not too mention 200 man LAN parties. :)

Yeah, Organized Chaos is fun...

Dont you get mice (mouses) for consoles? I'm sure you will be able to plug in a usb mouse and/or keyboard. Will the games support them though?

Lets look at plusses for consoles:
* pretty graphics
* no patches
* all the women in the world find you desirable because you own a XBOX 360 / PS3
* game installations? nope

Plusses for PC's:
* erm, versatility
* eventually some games get ported to PC
* erm, HDD?
* yeah, fps's
* its a PC

I will always own a pc, but consoles are winking at me... STOP THAT!!! ag, ok, come over here...

i find it easier to play with up to 4 people on the xbox on one BIG TV screen... no hassles to bring PC's, screens and cables... just pop the game in and voila!

the xbox and PS2 have adapters to connect USB mice, keyboards and monitors... its just a matter of finding them.

but i suppose its always best to have all the PC and console fun you can have, just buy them ALL! :D

I went to a friends place for a piss-up, and all I had to take was my controller. No monitor, casing, nothing. On a big TV, split screen is really cool. Halo 2 co-op split screen really went down well.

On halo 2.. I used to knock consoles all the time about playing an FPS with a controller.. when I got my xbox, I really struggled for quite a while.. and then it clicked.. now it's as natural as moving with a mouse.

my biggest problem with Halo 2 COOP is that i cant find anybody to have enough patience to join me for a game... sigh... :(

ouch!
that ps3 spec is powerful...

:rolleyes:

I think there's a lot to be said for ATI's unified shader architecture in the new GPU, for one. Secondly, the floating point performance of the Cell chip, which is of most importance to games, is questionable. Cell is a great chip for media processing, which is why the chip will also be used in tv's in the near future, but it's a media chip first, games chip second. Then there's coding complexity..

Hmmmm...
6.5 X $299 = R1943.50 .
Gee whizz, do you think someone's making a nice cut ?

To be fair, it would appear (judging by the listing of the 20gb hard drive) that they're selling the $400 version. And from all my experience, the general rule when converting US dollar prices for electronics to the price at which they'll be available locally, is "multiply by 10".

Which isn't to say I support the price. Hell, I don't really even care, I'm a PC gamer through and through.
