XBOX 360 COOLING FAN

Load of crap the external fan.

Adds heat build up to the inside of the chassis. It has also been known to melt to the back of the console ... rendering it useless.

That's just my personal experience when it comes to repairing a unit that had that attached to it.

Others swear by it though :D

As usual, I'll trust your judgement Maestro!
But are there known "heat" issues with the XBOX or is it just a niffty useless gadget?

The main problem with the Xbox is the fact that the DVD-ROM drive sits on top of the GPU. There is a very small gap for ventilation.

The newer 360s have a larger GPU heatsink that dissipates the heat next to the CPU (enlarged as well) heatsink where there is space. Unfortunately, the rear fan is the only fan source in the entire chassis and only blows out the hot air.

Time will tell if this flawed cooling design will work. IMO there should be another fan integrated into the front of the console to aid cooling. There is 3rd-party internal cooling add-on's, but they tend to draw power from the DVD power outlet which to me isn't very sufficient.

I do think the die shrink will help as it needs less power to run the entire mobo, and by definition generates less heat.
