Hi there

Before the NXE, I could swear I was able to play .avi files (.divx/.xvid) - or even stream via Tversity without the need of logging into Xbox Live?

I have the Optional Media Update (which it tells me I need if I don't sign into Xbox Live). But as soon as I connect to Xbox Live, it seems fine, the videos playback fine.

Did MS incorporate this type of 'authentication' with the NXE? Or has it always been there? ........OR is my Optional Media Update corrupted/messed?

Can anyone try this and let me know?

Thanks in advance.

I read on the xbox 360 local forums that you need to be signed in to Live to play the files, no way of getting round it AFAIK. And yes, it came with NXE...

Please correct me if I'm wrong anyone..

Thanks for the quick response Feo, really appreciate it. Aw, that sucks! Well at least that confirms my OMU isn't corrupted or messed and that I'm not going insane.

i haven't been on live in a month and my stuff plays just fine (logged into profile or not)
i have NXE installed

have you tried creating a random profile and download it from that user? i've seen quite a few people recommend that, even though i did not.

sorry i cannot be of more help :(

Wrong actually ;)! the DivX codec is not free for commercial use, therefore Microsoft has to pay a licensing fee for each unique device that uses it. The only way to keep track of how many consoles require this codec is to tie it to the individual machine, IE gamertag ! there is a simple solution though, all u need to do is delete the codec from ur system including all video bookmark data. create a second gamertag and download the codec again via that gamertag's live account. u can then play movies offline without being connected to live. after u download the codec u can use it on ur orginal account offline and u can then delete the second gamertag (if u want) u created and the videos will still work.

bit off topic, but i installed the codecs and popped in a dvd with some series i downloaded but the video quality was rubbish compared to playing it on a PC. Is this normal or still an issue with the codecs?
Tnx

never had such problems ! maybe the series u download are encoded in a poor resolution or maybe they're highly comressed. i'v watched the entire season 4 of lost recently (encoded in xvid) and it was crystal clear even on an SDTV

I used to watch my DivX and Xvid vids on my Xbox, but then I got a PS3. The PS3 upscaler is AWESOME!

How you do that?

I can only play Divx videos for now on my PS3.

I don't know why, but the PS3 seems to need a supported file extension before it will attempt to read the file header, so try renaming it to .avi first then play it.

(I tried playing a .divx file with no extension, it didn't work)

I just tried two methods.

1) Connected a WD mobile HDD - worked. Beautifully.
2) Renamed a streaming xvid to avi - didn't work.

Weird. Will investigate.

@ Nduimiso:

Doesn't seem so. Divx files play very nicely. Though, they must be Divx encoded.

xvid and divx are the same from what i understand, if you can play divx you can play xvid, im open to correction though,

They are similiar but not exactly alike ! xvid is an open source version of divx ! kinda like a reversed engineered codec that does the same thing but in a different way. Xvid is divx spelled in reverse BTW ;)

Xvid is an implementation from the specification. Wasn't DivX initially based on a reverse engineered Microsoft codec?
