Xbox 360 failure rate decreases drastically

dude the xbox sounds like a v12 with those fans spinning not to mention all that noise from the dvd-rom, surely those extractor fans are suppose to "extract" the heat, i mean my pc has soo much less ventilation than my xbox , my pc runs hot as hell due to multiple HDD's but she works like a charm, that's the difference in quality and proper testing to ensure a WORKING system. MS should of realize that the Xbox360 is made for gaming, i mean really gamers are the most serious of hardware users, dare I say at time abusers, so with that in mind u don't make something flimsy and weak for gamers, yeah the xbox360 is a machine, but I'd compare it like being married to a supermodel, but she get's a headache very often,... if u get my drift.

So yeah Microsoft is not always to blame but I'd say that the mayority of the blame is and will remain theirs. When u release a product into the market, you do enough research into who u selling it too. If u selling a watch to a deep sea diver u pretty much make sure the thing is waterproof, same with use gamers, if u making a gaming system, u must truely knwo this thing is gonna be put through it's paces, and will be milked for all it's got...

lol maestro my PS2 used to be stored in a closet with little ventilation...still alive.
Yes some ppl are silly to have the xbox up against a wall in a shelve with no ventilation bt in many many many cases like PixelPusha the xbox was looked after real well but still rrod.this has nothing to do with the gamers but a huge stuff up .... and surely when they do testing they think about something as simple as ventilation and what will happen to the xbox if it has no air circulation.i will never stand up for Microsoft and thier huge mess up of a console...but i will still play it.

Don't use the PS2 or previous-gen consoles as a yard stick.

This generation uses lead-free solder for onboard components, which is the only reason for all the 'ring of death' hardware failures.

Testing, uhm moot point as the heat tolerance of lead-free solder joints are pitiful to say the least.

My own independent tests have shown that a Xbox 360 takes 3 hrs 10 mins to reach room temperature after you shut down.

I'm going to test the next PS3 that comes in to test it but I can imagine it also takes a while.

In my day to day experience, its not only the GPU/CPU of the 360/PS3 where the solder connection cracks/degrades its the RAM as well -- hence RROD or YLOD.

The cooldown period is simply not quick enough. Sure, they can increase the space so that ventilation inside the console is better but then the consoles in question will be much larger than they currently are.

I actually need to check where space was crimped on the PS3 Slim, but from what I've seen from tear down pics on the Net not much is different motherboard layout or cooling system wise.

The only real option they have is a die shrink or combining the CPU/GPU into one processor.

I'm also waiting to see if I can import the uni-clamp solution they came up with in Germany for the Xbox 360. Its a plate that goes underneath the processors that even outs the tightness of the heat sink's.

I have to LOL sometimes when I get a client that did a DIY then the console broke down again. When I open it up the mounting holes for the heat sinks are cracked -- bye bye Xbox

So I'm not defending any console ... its just the timing for ROHS compliance wasn't beneficial to console makers.

Where they did get it right was in security. This gen is the best in terms of a security system implemented in a consumer entertainment device. That is for both the 360 and PS3.

The Nintendo Wii, being essentially a last-gen machine is the best option for homebrew (old school gaming and 3rd-party media players, etc) at the moment.

There is some homebrew development on the 360 at the moment but it means that your console cannot be upgraded with the Summer 09 Live update which blocks the hack.

I've been toying with it, and we can now play SNES Mario Bros with sound and wireless controller support. Pretty cool!

Now the question begs why the standard PC's/Notebooks do not suffer so greatly with the exact same issues then. Just asking.

Thats where the price difference comes in. You won't really get much for a $299 notebook. Price is dependent on the materials used. Besides recovery of intellectual capital.

I've re-flowed quite a few notebooks in my time with faulty GPUs as well as PC graphic cards.

Not as much as consoles obviously, as that is my main area of expertise.

Of course laptops are a different kettle of fish with various other materials used. The quality of components is also different.

the failures would not of been a problem if the warranty process was much better (has gotten better, but was hell!!)

You reckon it's better?

I handed mine in the same day as you (28 May) and I'm still waiting ... I'm on 100 days now. They said to me last week that it'll be dispatched this week :/

I'm then selling it - anyone interested? ;)

dude, we still on the last effects off the horrid MIDIGITAL, but the ones now dealt with from day one with powercare is much better, and with comztek will even be better!!! we were the casualties of this horrid MID war...
