OK I have had my Xbox for 2 weeks or so... with I have finished Gears on casual.. about 4 times through the game it gave a disc unreadable... is this normally.. I never had any problems with my PS2.. is this gonna be a trend for all the xbox games...

MS is gonna have to do something about this..

I've only had this once with Marvel:Ultimate Alliance. Gave the disc a wipe (even though there was not a scratch) and haven't had the problem since.

Never had any kind of disc related problem. (Only had my 360 for a month or so, though).

OK MY FRIEND

you have "THE ERROR" that microsoft does not want to recognise.
your xbox360 is scratching your discs.
Mine is doing this too...So what we BOTH need to go do is return your xbox at the shop and get a new one.
So far i realized there are 2 versions of this.

Mine does the following..i play game and boom the "Unreadable dics" thing pops up. And I eject my disc.
And "OOH SH*T" my disc has a perfectly round scracth on the surface.

Yours probably does the same but you cannot see the scratch. LOOK MORE CLOSELY miniature scrathes are there.
2 of my friends has this problem as well.

I Know this is so iritating..because your disc gets screwed up..

Currently i`m using DiscDefender ..but that is sooo crap. because i have to put the dics in 10 times or more before it realises its a xbox disc
and also the thing scratches more. At least my disc is ok..but i`m afraid the lens of xbox might peg sooner this way.

So bottom line ..go get a new xbox.
But i`m starting to worry that the shops just give us all the previosly returned ones..so chances are high that well get a broken one again..

What out for these games ..they tend to do it -> Viva pinata , gears of wars , dead rising , call of duty 2.
I think it's the discs that has to load major data and thus spin so fast they buckle and scracth...

SUCKS..

That doesn't make sense... The DVD Player spins at top speed no matter how much data is on the DVD. The only difference is that it might need to spin longer to load the data, maybe that is what you meant.

I have heard of the problem but I never experienced it, my mate had the problem with Open Season but it was a disc error and not the Xbox.

The other obvious one is that you MUST NOT move the Xbox while there is a disc in the tray. Ever....

My personal opinion is that leaving the box horizontal might help avoid this.

Tenshi / Gregg: Do you play with wired or wireless controllers?

Wireless..and @GavinMannion -> i did not mention that i dont MOVE my console while playin ..i think that is SOO obvious by now that it will scratch.

Also go look on international sites..those are the games that has problems.also i returned my viva game TWICE and it scracthed twice ,so it's not the disc.

BULLSH**T I`m not that dumb. I cannot even move it , it's horisontal and the rack it's in prohibits me from even putting it upright.

What is the Xbox's drive mechanism like? A notebook one or the normal cd-rom style one?

oi I did say that it was obvious didn't I?

I swear some people have such a chip it becomes impossible to talk with them.

some idiot designed something wrong somewhere!!!

So, contact me, get your xbox flashed and backup your discs ;)

Surely someone could come up with a way to replace the DVD drive with a reliable on or a note book one ??? I have seen something about rubber inserts onth e lalma xbox site

I promised myself never to modchip my console again..messed up my ps2 and xbox gets messed up by new firmware..so no thanks

Don't know how the hell you can mess up your xbox 360 by flashing your dvd-roms firmware, must be a real tit who does it to mess up such a simple job...

You can replace it with another dvd-drive, you just have to flash that drive with the firmware to make it spoof it as the original with the originals identification number injected into the firmware.
