XBOX finally gave in...

So, my 4 year old XBOX decided to give up the ghost and flash 3 nice red lights this morning (yes, it's quite early - I couldn't sleep). The thing is, the console REALLY doesn't get that much action - maybe 5-10 hours a month, if that much. I suspected something odd last week when I got a corrupt game save in Fallout 3, which AGAIN happened this morning. After restarting the XBOX I got the dreaded ring.

So, seeing as the console is out of warranty, what's the best course of action now? Who's the most reputable XBOX handy (wo)man for the job and what's the costs I'm looking at?

I also got the RROD while playing Fallout 3.
 
You can get it repaired for around R250/R300, if you look in the right places. Places that charge R600+ are a rip off. I repaired mine for R300 and I got a 6 month guarantee with it.
 
Thanks for all the suggestions people - weird thing though: I turned the 'box off and on a couple of times to confirm the RROD status, which was confirmed. I tried again just one last time before leaving for work and then it worked... Methinks something is not lekker on the inside, so would it still be worthwhile to get it checked out or not?

Alternatively, I might buy one of those new slim 'boxes - I just need to go through the trouble of backing up all my data from the HDD, seeing as the old HDD doesn't fit the new slim 'box. Which leads to the next question - what's the easiest process to do THAT?

Lynnwood Ridge is not that far at all - I work in Centurion and know the Pretoria region quite well (I lived / studied there for 4 years :D). If the price is decent I might consider it... Wasn't the owner of this company a regular on MyBB at some point?

I repaired my XBOX 360 myself. It cost me about R50. All you need to do is buy some 5mm screws and some thermal paste. The RROD is caused by overheating, basically the heat sink on the GPU has pulled away from the chip. there are several PDF documents detailing how to repair the problem. I repaired mine about 2 years ago and it's still working perfectly.

Very awesome, thanks! I'll get some thermal paste and get it done over the weekend. Have tons of 5mm screws lying around in the garage... :D

Maestro for the win. He'll sort you out at a very reasonable price.

You're free to try the Powercare route, but who knows how many months it will be until you get a replacement Xbox out of them. Lynnwood isn't that far from Midrand - it took me about 45 minutes to get there from Randpark Ridge, so it should take you about 30 minutes.
