Xbox Live, be my friend?

I'm thinking of joining Xbox Live gold for some online play finally. Played a bit of Hot Pursuit, Red dead and forza online under a trial account and loved it.

Is there a community or list of local gamers I can join and get involved with so I can enjoy some of the action with the local guys? XBL is a bit lonely as I don't know anyone who plays on XBL.
