You can change your nick straight from the marketplace trhoguh the dashboard but at a cost of 800 points... It is pricey but I guess they are trying to persuade people not to do it...

I know a few people who have done it already with no problems

Yip. I have done it and didnt lose anything at all. Just remember not to make this a habit.
