Okay so I searched for bandwidth related info and didn't find much on Mybb. I need to know a few things about live. Today I connected to live, setup my account and got playing with Halo 3 online. Latency was not very great, obviously connected to a UK server. Now i'm totally clueless when it comes to how much bandwidth is used when playing online. I have an unshaped capped 512 line. Could someone please inform me of everything I need to know when playing on xbox live? Bandwidth used per hour, latency required, etc etc. In the end, is it worth paying for? Thanks!

Hi,

Latency to international games is a problem for us, local is the way to go, get yourself some South African friends on XBL and jam with them it is miles better. As for Bandwidth, 512kbps is more than enough to play online for most games, we played two online on a 384 for a long time. Generally you cannot host games (Gears/COD etc) unless you are on a 4mb. How much data you use is largely dependant on what games you play, if you host etc. A nights gaming can be anything from 40mb to 400mb for a player.

Is it worth it? Without a doubt, year subscription works out to less than R40 a month...

I play lots of Gears 2 and Forza 3, if you keen to jam these send me your Gamertag and I will put you on my Friends list and send you some invites to local games.

Awesome! Thanks for the reply (finally hehe). Ok i'm looking at buying Bad Company 2, but the bandwidth is probably going to be an issue? I will only be playing online for 1 hour a night or so, of course theres the weekends where I will end up playing longer. Is MW2 a better option for low bandwidth? I have a 2 gig cap of which about 1 gig gets used for normal net browsing. My gamer tag is Badger282.

realy no differnce between the bandwith used for games, just realy depends on ho long you play

1 gig might not be enough though?
maybe consider going for lower speed (384) but get uncapped

unfortunately I don't really have a choice when it comes to my cap (not my decision). I'm not going to be playing every single night. Just the odd game every now and then. How sure are you that the game doesn't matter when it comes to bandwidth usage?

yep the game realy doesnt matter(unless you count downliding maps updates etc then its another story), but i would work on an average of anything from 10MB to 50MB and hour (if you not hosting).

Battlefield Bad Company 2.... get it! It's awesome! Despite having to play on overseas servers the games net-code does pretty well at hiding the lag. Now and then you may get an opponent getting the draw on you because of lag but for the most part you will be having to much fun to notice. I do have a 4 meg line so not sure how much that contributes to it.

I roughly calculate battlefields bandwidth to be around 50 to 60 megs per hour. I get by on a 5 gigs per month playing it (with some web surfing now and then and the occasional video streaming or download) and I play about 3 hours a night.

I just might get BC2 :) Are there not any local servers to play on?
