Well, I'm thinking of getting an Xbox after waiting for the PS3 to rally (never gonna happen this or next gen, maybe aftrer but who cares about that anyway)...

Thinking of getting it from Telkom, but I need to know how to check for the latest revisions of the hardware. I really don't want RROD nightmares in the first couple of months (will be getting it close to christmas and it will be hot in my neck of the woods).

Also, is there anyway to run homebrew without chipping the b@stard. I really am loath to let anyone touch the insides of an already volatile machine. The reason I ask is because I'd like to play certain "goldy oldies" on MAME and I am not sure wehter the Xbox has this (although its not such a deal breaker but any onfo would be nice).

Thanks!

I think there is a way to check concerning the model number on the box (which I don't know about) but you could always check too see if it has an HDMI port on the back ..... if it has, run home and play because it's one of the newer models :D

There's no way to mod a 360 like they used to mod the original Xbox. a modded/chipped 360 is only capable of running game backups, it's not able to run unsigned code, so no homebrew per se.

There is totally legit homebrew coming in the form of XNA Community games which are totally awesome, and XBLA has a lot of retro classics for legitimate download (Most with pretty decent free demo's) - so much so as said earlier today, a guy I'm working with, who has a chipped 360, is buying a new one just to be able to download legit content as well.

As for the Telkom deal, what's it R100 for 24 months? Ultimately not a bad deal, but as I understand it, the 360s are "fixed/refurbished" core models. I'd say rather get the Musica special which is a new Arcade + FIFA 08 for R1800, and if necessary, take it on budget over 24 months.

Gotta disclaim the refurb thing doobiwan ...... from what I've gathered, it's only a Gauteng thing. My Arcade isn't a refurb and it seems that all the other guys who got theirs from Telscum here in KZN also have non-refurbs ;):D

Telscum has been selling refurbs to Gautengers ja. Not funny!

I will be having a special next week smokey. It has a hard drive, VGA cable, Live headset, 1 wireless controller, play & charge kit, console and PSU. Price on my website soon!

Cool nana's. Then, Smokey just check it out in person.

Just went to the mall, and the box says (in big white letters surrounded by green) Xbox 360 Core System. I'm in the Northern Cape (Kimberley)... Looks bad...

BTW... I couldnt get that FIFA special... Can't see myself buying anything that gives FIFa (OK, you say its for free, but blegh). I'm sure that there will be a bundle with PES coming out.

PS: Going to ask tomorrow wether the display model is an old one (I know the lady working there) so maybe I'll be able to get another (Arcade) one.

Thanks for all the answers.

EDIT: Just looked at my post... It looks like a telegram lol

No problem.

That bundle at R1800 seems to be a Musica only special, apparently you may have to go instore and ask for it specifically, or possibly even get them to order it for you

I agree about soccer games, but even just an Arcade at R1800 is a great deal ;) And it gives you something to trade ...

True true, forgot about the whole trading thing.

Oh and on the topic of those retro games, that was what got me to seriously look at the xbox. Still, I would have liked to be able to play certain arcade roms (check for the ones i liked on xbla and they are not there...). Oh yeah... I like soccer games, but FIFA is just a waste of time AFAIC - were it PES though.... I'd already be an xbox owner :)
