I'm thinking of getting my self an Xbox, but I need to have a couple of things cleared up so I thought I'd ask the experts first :)
I see that there is basically just 2 versions available in stores. The 4GB and the 250GB. Except for the obvious difference in hdd space, is there any other hardware differences ? And if Microsoft feels that 4gb is enough space, why is there a 250gb version ?
Will I have the same functionality with the 4gb as with the 250gb.

Thanks

Newer games need a HD pack install (they look really ****ty if their not in hd) and those HD packs don't install on the 4gb flash memory, only on a hdd, no brainer really, get the 250gb:)

4gig version means you won't be doing anything useful online or installing the game to your hard drive to save on your laser.

My 2c is get a PS3. Worth it for Uncharted alone.

I see that you can buy hdd's separately. If I go the 4gb route will I be able to get one of these later on, and just "bolt" it on to the console ? Will it then essentially be the same as a 250bg ?

I do have a PS3. The Xbox will be for my daughter. All her friends have xboxes, and she wants to join them in online play.

But what about halo and forza:p

And PS3's updates are always faaarking big and slow, pros and cons

Yep you'll be able to add a hdd should you get the 4gb, but in the long run its cheaper to just get the 250gb console, those hdd cost like a R1000

My PS3 updates itself every night at 03:00. I don't even notice that it updates.

Thanks... that's what I was hoping for. For now she can use the 4gb as is. It gives me an opportunity for another gift somewhere down the line:)

It's a good time to buy a PS3 or 360. They're nearing the end of their lives so you've got a massive catalogue of games to choose from & the ones still being released are using the available hardware to the full.

If you go 360 get the 250gb console. You'll invariably want some DLC at some point, and the HDD gives you the opportunity to install games thus saving on wear & tear of the optical drive.

:wtf: I think you caught the arse-end of a stick somewhere. BLOPS II - unreleased - will have an optional texture pack on the PS3 in order to save the Bluray's laser. Battlefield somethingorother, if I recall, did something similar on the 360 last year. That's 2 games out of 100s, if not 1,000s.

What you can also do is get the 4gb console and if you want some extra storage, you can use a usb flash drive. Microsoft allow you up to use a flash drive (up to 16gb) as additional storage. It will however format your drive if im not mistaken. But a 16gb flash stick can be found for R99 these days and seeing as tho games are only a couple of gigs to install, it will be enough i feel.

Battlefield 3, MOH warfighter, halo 4 all games I played recently that needed HD texture pack installs, and trust me they look **** without it, nowhere did I mention 100's and 1000's of games that needed these installs, and neither catch any sticks by the arse end:erm:, my point stands, there are new/newer games that need texture pack installs, so the OP might miss out on some better graphics if he doesn't have a hdd.

**** PS3, get an Xbox

And get the 250gb (or higher) version if you can. You can buy games on the store without requiring CD's and crap, so you need the space for the games installed (I have 2 games on my old XBox and the hdd on there is already full)

Only meant to imply that it's a very, very small number of games in question. Regardless, we're saying much the same thing in the end I think - get the 250gb HDD. One can always buy DLC or Games on Demand (get a UK Live account as an aside!) as gifts later, rather than skimping on the HDD.

Far as I know USB thumb drives don't allow for the installation of DLC. Might be wrong on that count...

Thanks for the input guys.
I'm looking at a deal from BT Games.
250gb + 1 controller + Tiger Woods PGA Tour 13 game + download tokens for Fable 3, Gear of War 2, Halo Reach. How does the download tokens work. Is it the full game, or demo ?

Does this look like a good starter deal ? Keeping in mind that we will probably not use a second controller right now.

And I'm still not clear on the Live account thing. Do I buy a token online and just redeem it when I create my account ? And if I do not want to use my credit card can I buy tokens from brick and mortar stores ?

You can pay for it online with your credit card once you create your account via your xbox, or you can go to like CNA and purchase Xbox Live membership voucher/code, but I just pay for it online with my CC

Have a look here and here.

My LIVE account's like 6 years old by now, so I'm a little hazy on the details. Far as I recall you'll choose your region when you create the account on the console. You might have to fudge a few lines in the address; I think I reside at Buckingham Palace as far as my Xbox is concerned. Wouldn't advise a local LIVE account as our friends at the Films and Publications Board severely hamstring what's available.
