What's the cheapest way to get wifi on my Xbox?

I'm assuming you have one of the old white /grey ones.

scour ebay / amazon etc for the wifi dongle

Cheapest?

Use a old Wifi Router, and set it to "Bridge mode",configure it to connect to your home wifi, use a normal ethernet cable to connect the xbox to the router, it will then act as a wifi bridge and connect to your home wifi.
