My laptop (now with MCE 2005) has a 100mbps LAN connection and a wireless card.

Now there is no physical way I can get a lan cable to my ADSL router from my Xbox360. So I was thinking of hooking up my Xbox on my laptop via the LAN connection, and then let my laptop do its magic to the internet with the wireless.

The xbox would have an IP address (as far as I know)
My NIC on the laptop would have one too.

How would I set it up so that it uses my wireless for the internet connection? I was thinking this might work:

Wireless: 192.168.0.2
NIC: 192.168.0.3
Xbox: 192.168.0.4

And then make the gateway on the Xbox 192.168.0.2

??

Any insight would be great

Why Don't you try get the wireless connection for your xbox? Or is that a bit pricy?

Unfortunately ATM yes. It would cost me cheaper to buy a lan cable that long as the wireless doohickey. Cash strapped and having the laptop (now using a work one) I was thinking of actually getting onto Xbox live at long last.

AcidRazor, you can do what you want if you have the wireless adapter for the Xbox. If you have a wireless access point its pretty easy. Without an access point you can bridge your LAN and wireless on the laptop and get wirelessly connected to the Xbox.

I've even done it via my cellphone (3G)->Laptop->Xbox, all wireless, but this takes more effort to setup. I use this setup at my girlfriends place (who doesn't have internet) and you can browse the web on the laptop while being online on the Xbox at the same time or stream music or videos from the laptop to the xbox to the TV.

How would I go about bridging the LAN and Wireless card? Is it really necessary? Will my idea fail dismally?

All you need to do it plug a lan cable into the 360 and your laptop, then go into network connections and right click the LAN connection. Go to advanced and enable Internet Connection Sharing.

The laptop will then give the 360 an IP Address and away you go...

My live worked like this for a long time without any realy problems.

Oh okay so no real setup on the wireless is necessary, only ICS on the laptops NIC. Cool, might try that tonight IF I get home from work before midnight

Hmm - it may be ICS on the wireless cnnection - that's the path to the gateway, either way, it's ICS on the notebook . .

Woops doobiwan is correct, setup ICS on the wireless connection and it will automatically bridge the LAN connection...

No ICS needed if you bridge the connections. ICS will set your LAN adapter to 192.168.0.1 if I remember correctly which may conflict with your router.
