Xen or KVM host in ZA

Hi guys,

I've asked the oracle, but can't seem to turn up any reputable companies that does KVM or Xen hosting.
I know about most of the local ones, but they don't seem to match my criteria.

My criteria is:
* Affordable, R200 or less
* Uses KVM(preferred), or Xen
* Will grant me a FreeBSD install
* Local preferrably, <120ms latency from PTA.
* Min specs: 512MB mem, 10GB disk, 20GB transfer @ 10Mbps(dedicated or 100Mbps shared)

I see that VPS.net has Xen hosting, but they're out of the question.
I'm unsure about the prices for Elitehost, but I think they do Xen(from their status page at least).
Afrihost is a bit too expense, since the machine will be used for personal agendas.

Does anyone know a local or fast international hosting provider that can meet this criteria?

Why these hypervisors.

Second Question,

Why not other hypervisors.

Based on that I may or may not be able to help.
 
Well, I want to run FreeBSD on them. The only popular ones I can think of that will reliably support it is KVM and XEN-HVM
 
That and KVM is amazing in all honesty. I too prefer KVM based hypervisors, having worked with them myself at home as well as Digital Ocean's VPS's though they in Amsterdam so won't work for you.

I also use KVM a lot, and it's what I know the best... so it's naturally my preferred choice. =)

I already have a Debian machine with Digital Ocean and they're pretty awesome, but they do not - yet - offer FreeBSD as an installation candidate.
 
Elitehost VPS's are hosted in PTA and ping from Gtown is 40ms so should be good but no FreeBSD unfortunately. Oceanhost has more options

Do you have to have that OS or what do you need to do? Fair usage policies apply on EH's uncapped (1tb lol)

Hi. Which version of FreeBSD are you looking for? We have 9.0, 9.1 & 9.2 on KVM.
 
Not to sound like a troll but it hardly matters what FreeBSD is hosted on provided that provision is made for it.

I in no way have any bias towards any system and I have pretty much used all of them.

I am sure anyone offering linux can offer Freebsd, it may not just be requested in large quantities, so just ask them :)
 
So nand did you come right with this?

Out of interest sake, did some reading on KVM + Freebsd if the host only uses VirtIO with their KVM servers.
FreeBSD 9.0 and 8.2 needs drivers injected at install time, the easiest guide I could find for this is BigV's guide which use a special ISO.
FreeBSD 10 at least will have this out of the box which is pretty awesome, I bet you will see many more KVM based VPS hosters supporting FreeBSD 10 once final is released, unless final is out now? I see press release was the 24th.

Sorry, I almost forgot about this thread.

I didn't really find any cost effective solutions locally. Still need to take a look at Ocean...

At the moment I'm running FreeBSD 9 CURRENT on a RHEL6 server with KVM(Solus slave) at Hetzner DE. The VM is stable, but nothing I'd brag about. The obvious problems are still there(lvm, latency, etc).

What exactly is the problem with lvm?

Also, does that install use VirtIO or emulated drives/network?

The lack thereof. It's using VirtIO.

If I had the money to waste, I would've opted for a NAS.
