Xiaomi phone firmware and root

I have a Xiaomi cellphone I am playing around with. It currently has the Chinese firmware loaded. It's not really a massive problem, but I am planning to load the EU ROM.

To do that, I need to unlock the bootloader. So my question is, is that the same as rooting/jailbreaking a phone?

I assume if I do that, I won't be able to use my banking apps?
 
To unlock the boot loader you have to put a request in and there's a delay to have the permission added to your account.

So put the request in immediately even if you don't end up doing it.

To answer unlocking the boot loaded is just opening the door to do the rooting among other things.

Depending on how you go about things your banking apps will still work.

I have an unlocked bootloader with a custom ROM (pixel experience), no root though.

You can also lock the boot loader again when loading the official ROM again.

Also note, unlocking the boot loader will format the phone.
 
Awesome, thanks for the response! I have already requested permission, and the 7 days has passed but I was weary of doing something irreversible.

I'm still contemplating doing this because I am not sure what the benefit of the EU ROM would be, aside from none of the included Chinese software/bloatware.
 
Go for the Xiaomi.eu ROM at the very least. They strip out a lot if the bloat and advertising and it makes for a much better experience. You don't have to root it just unlock load that ROM and you are good to go.

When loading official roms using their flashing tool the end result is a locked bootloader and OEM status so no risk.

If I wanted I can revert back to stock from my custom ROM and all would look factory.
 
Just make sure that Xiaomi.eu (they are a different entity to Xiaomi themselves) does a ROM for your phone - they're not keen on Mediatek devices. If not, have a look at Pixel Experience.
 
Also used Pixel experience on my xiaomy, probably best rom out there, although or exactly the same as a Pixel phone.
 
I have unlocked the bootloader and flashed Xiaomi.eu MIUI 13 on the Mix 4 phone.

It's a surprisingly quick process, and only the first boot after the install takes a bit longer than usual.

No more Chinese bloatware, and no issues with banking apps.
