Specs:
Screen: 4.7 inches, Resolution 720 x 1280 pixels
CPU: Snapdragon 410
Ram: 2gb
Supports 4g, has 8mp camera, light sensor, etc.
Software: Miui 7 custom rom based android kitkat
Looks and reminds me of the gobii IVP. It has matte plastic back which is a bit slippery and doesn't flex much.
The capacitive buttons don't light up but is reflective under light so it looks like it lights up. There is a single notification led light just by the middle button.
I'm also getting 4G on MTN when signal is available, weird as I read somewhere that this phone doesn't support MTN/Vodacom 4G bands.
Miui is nice, looks nice and the security options are brilliant. You can select apps that you don't want to use network data, and manage permission on app by app basis.
Overall it slows the phone down severally, even more than touchwiz. I got a galaxy s4 mini which has similar specs except for 512mb less ram but the redmi runs at least 10-30% slower. Firefox runs smoothly on the s4 mini but lags on redmi.
Also swiping across the buttons launches one handed mode on the phone that reduces the screen to 4 or 3.5' of the total screen size, seems handy.
Based on miui forums, Lolipop based miui is in beta testing for this phone.
Camera is okay....The color balance sucks. Looks yellowish and out of balance and sometimes over saturated but the auto focus is fast.
Screen: Really good. Text and everything is as sharp as you can get on a 720p screen. Color is good and gets bright. Feels like a high quality screen. The automatic brightness is a bit funny, it feels like it just cranks the screen to max brightness most of the time. I had the g3 beat and the screen was more pixelly than the redmi, that 0.3' smaller screen on the redmi makes it so much sharper.
Getting accessories is near impossible for this phone except from: http://mia.africa.com/za/accessories-za and their prices are a rip off. I was at china mall by main reef road and only one guy out of 50+ shops had only tpu case for this phone @R80 when others sell tpu cases for only R40.
Overall a very good phone, has brilliant screen. Its snappy. It may be slightly slower than the s4 mini but its much faster than other phones with only 1gb ram. That extra 1gb makes a lot of difference even when comparing phones with same CPU but only 1gb ram. And it seems like it got R100 off at game and dion wired, they are now going for R1899
