Hi all,

https://www.afrihost.com/landing/smart_devices/

I saw this the other day and it looks quite appealing. Has anyone here ever owned a Xiaomi phone? Afrihost claims that they are top quality but I've never heard of the brand and by the looks of it, it seems to be Chinese.

Your thoughts on these mobiles? Do you think it's worth taking the plunge to something completely different?

I have the Mi4. I bought it for R3700 when they came out. Given the price the phone is great. My only gripe is that the GPS is bad. It takes ages to find your location and loses signal easily. I got it working better by rooting the phone and manually changing the NTP servers.

Read up on the one you like and check if there are any known issues.

Judging by the comments in those threads, it seems that the phones really are quality devices with an affordable price tag. Wondering if they will become as mainstream as Huawei in the near future, as I don't see any mobile operators in SA stocking their phones at the moment.

The reason being Huawei is officially available here whereas Xiaomi is sold via a distributor (MIA). They're already number 2 in wearables worldwide and their phones are selling like hotcakes in India/China. They're also poised to launch in the US this year.
