Yes, pretty much. On mobile devices such as cellphones where it does not have hard decoder capabilities it will be handed over to the software decoder though which will take a bit more battery however. Youtube app on Android is now also switching to AV1 as default, which some are not happy with because of the battery life penalty it will incur.
 
Hi guys. Sorry for the necro. Just wanted to see if anyone else have had this issue with their Gen 2 box. About a week ago I heard a hissing noise coming from the back of my TV. According to my ears, it was coming form the multi plug adaptor. Turn TV and TV box off, sound goes away. The other day before going to the shops we paused the TV and again the hissing noise. Then the Google TV screensaver started and as soon as the first picture came up on screen, the hissing noise stopped. I was perplexed.

Anyway, so last night after changing the plug etc, I figured out it was not coming from the multi plug adaptor, but from the actual tv box after holding it to my ear. I googled and it does seem to be a known issue. I did what they suggested in the link below and it seems to have gone. Any of you guys had the same problem?
