Hi guys,

I'm having a problem and it's driving me crazy

All of a sudden yesterday, my XP starts going bonkers, a message keeps popping up saying "A network cable is unplugged" as if, you guessed it, someone had uncerimoniously yanked out my CAT5. The thing is the cable is still there, connected thru a switch to a Netgear adsl modem.

I can't get XP to get an IP from DHCP on the Netgear, nothing! Keeps telling me it's given itself an "Automatic Private Address".

The wierd thing is it disconnects and then reconnects within 2 seconds and does it randomly, sometimes every 10 second, sometimes longer!

Have to say I've never come accross anything like this before.

Anybody able to help please??

You reset the router?
Are there other computers on the LAN, are they behaving normally?
try reinstalling NIC drivers.

Heya Jah,

I restarted the router, twice, all he other computers are working perfectly and I tried two different NIC's in the machine, still had the problem.

when I unplug the CAT5 from the demented machine and jam it into my notebook, everything works A-ok!!

Jah, I moved the pc, I'm a great believer in the theory that a computer gets bored of its surroundings and stops working untill you move it, and now it works... I'll bet money it'll break again soon though.

Shot for the help!!!

replace the fly lead, ther is short. also cheak the ethernet socket on the router/switch. and swap it to a different on.

run winsocks fix. just google it. It will fix the problem im sure.
I was bored so got u a link : http://www.networktechs.com/download-19/

If the cable worked on his laptop y would the cable be at fault and y swap the socket on the router if it worked fine on his laptop?
