I have a very annoying problem I have been unable to solve. PC running WinXP logs out IMMEDIATELY after logging in. Does not even show the desktop or anything. It says Applying personal settings and then immediately Logging off...

This happens with any user account on the PC, and in safe mode as well

Anyone seen this before?

slave your hdd in another pc then replace userinit.ex_ / userint.exe in the system32 folder with an original one on your windows xp cd

Could be a virus that creates a startup program to shutdown your PC?

Have you Googled it?

Can you try logging in in Safe Mode?

if that doesnt work then do a remote reg connect and:
Navigate in the registry on the infected PC to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\
In the right pane look for Userinit and the path should point to: C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe,

Had the same problem.Turned out to be a virus ,put the drive into another pc as a slave and scan with the latest updates.

The same thing happened to me when I applied a Windows XP crack to my sister's PC because I was too lazy to buy another license :D

i had this countless times, fubar is correct you must put another userinit file to fix the problem....otherwise format:D or just do a repair of windows.

+1

I've seen a few machines with this - I think there's a virus that trashes the reg entry.

You don't have to reformat to get it back

How do i know i'm safe from viruses like these? I'm using Kaspersky V8.0 with automatic updates. Is that sufficient?

you dont need antivirus software to be safe from virii, just common sense
