Heya'll,

Installing Xp on my mom's PC, new machine, ..it boots fine, boot from CDROM, fine, it starts inspecting computer's hardware setup, then the cd-rom stops spinning, and after a while it restarts, ..a couple times before, it restarted before even getting to inspecting the harware configuration screen!

Any ideas!?!

Thanks in advance, hopefully..:\

It even got to the do you want to install a third party SCSI controller etc. parts, and then screen goes black/ cdrom stops spinning..

Hmm..!>?!?!? :S

Can you hear the CPU fan spinning. You may have a case of overheating CPU. If it is, put you hand near the heatsink. If it is extremely hot, then overheating CPU anyway. Possibly faulty RAM, or a faulty powersupply as well. Check the CPU first, then take out the RAM and plug back in. If two or more RAM chips, plug each one in individually in and test. If this doesn't fix, try replacing Power supply, if problem persists, and you are sure the RAM is fine, and the CPU is not overheating, then you have a motherboard problem most likely. But firstly I'm guessing overheating proc, due to failed fan

basically what they saying is it could be anything :)

but overheating sounds

gve us specs to work with here :)

Ahoy thanks for the help guys :)

Ok, Sempron 2800+ (fan IS working..)
Aopen 350W (fan working)
Biostar 6100 AM2 (umj, northbriodge seems pretty hot..)
TwinMOS Memory - DDR2-667MHz - CL5 - 512MB

Is there any chance it could be the hard drive?
It's from the old system.. but I did try another HDD and same problem, it's also old tho..

Ok, so I switched RAM slots, ..It gets a bit further into the setup, starts loading stuff, but then same thing, CDROM slows down, black screen, and possible reboot!.. Sigh..

as far as i know you'll get up to the press enter to install before it checks the hdd

but i might be wrong

northbridges normally run pretty but not that fast

take the side panel off the box and try it like that
also use a normal house fan to blow air in

try loading it after 8 when the temp has dropped that should rull out heating problems

I had an issue upgrading some PC's yesterday, continuous reboots after 1st stage of XP set up (after the 1st reset) turns out the BIOS needs to be updated on the PC's. Have only experienced the problem with the versions of XP that have SP1 slipstreamed into them.

Hm, tried again this morning, got thru loading up drivers, read the agreements part, pressed F8, ..BSOD, and restart, sigh.. :S

o you get up to pressing f8

sounds like hdd to me cause it checks your hdd after f8

new HDD FTW

go and make sure that harddrive is working in another pc and then format the fuqer

Ok, will do mate, thnks, hopefully I'll report back with a smily face! "holds thumbs"

OK,i had this exact issue a little while ago and I replaced the power supply and all was fine.

I reckon the power supply is shot and not giving the disks enough juice to do the check.

Borrow a power supply from someone to check it out.

That's it Juggy, the one thing people give less credit to is the PSU, and it could be the cause of most if not all installation and troubleshooting issues, on the A+ course it's called the "silent killer" :D ;)

Could also be a faulty IDE/SATA controller on the motherboard.

But I would first try other things like a different PSU and HDD.

Shot guys, in the process of doin said methods!..
