Hey Guys, im in the IT industry so I hope i know what im doing. But i'm stumped here.

Need to do a repair install on a customers drive but the keyboard WILL NOT work in text based setup.

1. Tried USB and PS2
2. Enabled USB legacy/keyboard support in BIOS
3. Tried USB with PS2 dongle
4. Reset BIOS
5. Tried SATA and IDE HDD
6. Tried Clean install

Help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Beo...

Have you tried swapping the hard-drive? Sounds stupid but seeing as it's working if you boot from another source that seems to be something to rule out.

Three different Hard Drive's connected (one a clone of customers, the other my own (SATA and IDE)). Tried WITHOUT a HDD connected and same problem applies.

The strange thing, I can press F6 to load SCSI drivers but on the screen where Press Enter to setup XP, press R for recovery consle. That's where it stops working.

try another xp cd then, unless it is known good already

Three different CD's, SP2 and SP3 integrated discs.

Busy flashing the BIOS....

BIOS update didn't work :(

I'm screwed! I can't see how it could be the mainboard. Though I've replaced everything but mainboard and CPU.

Also tried SATA and IDE CDROM/DVDRW.

Tried a different keyboard? Tried with no mouse? Tried different kb/mouse combo's etc.?

Also USB - PS/2 converters don't always work.
Very rarely I'll get no keyboard with my KVM switch on certain PCs.

Tried USB keyboard, tried PS2 keyboard, tried USB keyboard with USB/PS2 dongle.

Nothing connected but bare minimum, ie. Power (obviously) Screen (duh) and keyboard.

HELP PLEASE!!!

maybe just suggest replacement! *shrug*

Have you tried a different PSU just to eliminate that possibility?

Lol well you've managed to stump the braintrust of MyBB so don't feel too bad about not knowing the answer :D Fact of the matter is the only way to troubleshoot a problem like this is to elimate all components one by one.

just tried another PSU, still nothing.

Changed RAM and CPU too.

I'm going suggest replacement PC. Seems like the easy way out but I'm screwed if i know!

You can safely assume the motherboard is giving in then (pray that's it) :)
makes sure your customer knows not to hotswap PS/2 and USB stuff.

Another possibility is a short on the board, loose screw etc. I've seen some PC's from the competition here mounted on the motherboards packaging foam, so don't just assume the PC is built correctly.

Really?! Thanks for the help!

Sorry if I seem a bit abrupt, just getting really f*#&$ed off!!!!

It's a Mustek/Mecer built PC, one would assume it's built correctly. In any case I did strip it and clean it out. Starting to think though that whatever caused the HDD to fail evidently did damage to the main board. It's just strange that it will work fine everywhere else but in TextBased setup.

At the moment I'm doing a repair install on the cloned drive on another PC which has an Asus mainboard but also Intel chipset (not identical board though). I should hopefully boot up on their PC at least. Will let you guys know how it goes...

It's an Asus P5GD2-TMX

But anyway, cut a long story short. Backup/Format/Reinstall... found to be the simplest option :P

Thanks for everyones help ;)

I would agree there, also see it's a propietary OEM board. Maybe contact Mustek about the problem as Asus will wipe their hands of it.

edit:
Oh, yeah and they would be cloning systems in their manufacturing plant and not installing in the conventional way. That could also be the issue.
