XP VS Linux?

I run OpenSUSE, Ubuntu, Red Hat and some other not so linux flavours. I talk from years of experience. My XP box has been a rock of stability. So has my Mac. My Linux boxes, on the other hand, have not.

I think you got confused there, you probably meant to say the linux is rock stable and other not so stable.

I've often heard GIMP touted as a Photoshop replacement but its not really in the same league.
To be fair, it's not even in the same sport. The GIMP cannot compete with PhotoShop. For free open source it's good, but for hard core graphics it's not the industry standard - and will never be.

I wrote exactly what I meant. In your experience it may be different, but I've just had too many apps crash on Linux to alter my perception. All my Linux servers are doing great, but the ones I run desktops on just plain suck ass.

You sure you using linux and the real gimp? I find gimp better than photoshop. Used photoshop for years, and recently started using gimp and as i say its way better for me.

Awesome for you. From an industry point of view, however, most graphics houses run PhotoShop. They do so because it is the best.

the odds do mean that someone has to have problems with linux.

They do it because they use windows. And i know a few web designers that use gimp, i for one use it. So not all out there use photoshop, only windows junkies.

ask yourself why do you want to change?

what does linux do that xp does not?

xp does everything linux does plus gaming

No it doesnt. First off, it doesnt require constant formats to keep performance and theres no chance of XP running something leet like compiz-fusion.

If you want a stable system that doesnt loose speed as the file system gets old then Linux is the better choice by a mile.

So no.. windows XP does not do everything that linux does.

And I would not want to hazard a guess as to the percentage of PS users who did not buy their copy.

You really are trying to push for an argument here, aren't you? Let's explore why top end graphics studios would use Photoshop, and not even consider using the GIMP:

The GIMP doesn't support PANTONE colorspaces.
The GIMP only supports CMYK through Plugins.
The same goes for RAW support (if you're a serious digital photographer and graphics artist, then you will see this is a massive limitation)

So, if you're a professional who works with graphics (today's "web designers" are excluded from these professionals because, let's face it, they're not), the GIMP likely doesn't feature in your choice of graphics applications. It just can't.

Gimp sucks compared to photoshop. Gimp is good for quick light editing, but you cant compare it at all to Photoshop which is miles ahead. My advice... run Photoshop on linux.

Seconded. If you can't justify spending money on buying PS, then GIMP is (one of the apps that is) an adequate cheaper replacement - but it doesn't really compare to PS.

I've used GIMP and find it lacking especially when it comes to Pantone or even CMYK. I can understand Pantone and not wanting to pay the licensing fees but CMYK?

Does GIMP support 16bit (and up) yet?

GIMP might be fine for some people but not me (and I'm no windows junkie ;))

Yes, Gimp is quite far behind PhotoShop, but to state that it will NEVER catch up, is a bit foolish on your part.

It will never catch up because it will never get PANTONE support (it will break that stupid GPL license ;) )

Well as long as they seemingly choose to imitate rather than innovate will they ever catch up? Adobe isnt exactly resting on its laurels.
