XP VS Linux?

Linux is efficient for everything I need, which includes website dev, graphics, video and office-type stuff. For me Vista was an exercise in frustration.

Your circumstances may vary so use what works for you.

yup thats quite correct

windows works really well for me, i do all my business multimedia and gaming on one platform

don't know where you get the impression video encoding is not possible in linux. it is highly more efficient in linux than on xp on my P4 2.67GHz with 1GB RAM.

but does linux make use of 4 cores

i mean if you have a quadcore system?

i dont know alot about linux to be honest

can linux encode avi to mpeg
mpeg to dvd
avi to dvd etc?

hmmm

so linux can run all my programs like photoshop corel draw x3

stuff like cyberlink power dvd
grabit
usenext

does linux have divx for hd movies?

does linux support hd movies

could linux run my dad's usb adsl modem?

Those are windows applications, so no they don't work (natively) under linux. But there are linux equivalents for those programs (remember, we had the long conversation about Photoshop/gimp in this thread?)

does linux have divx for hd movies?

does linux support hd movies
TBH not my area, don't know but I believe that you can.
could linux run my dad's usb adsl modem?
Yep.

Seriously you at times make me question your intelligence... How can vista do everything linux can and more? pray tell? you yourself never seem to have used a linux box of any form... Vista is ****, windows is only around for games, linux does pretty much everything else and its free and faster to boot, it also has more uses - network security for one is a biggie - no malware - hardly and viruses and more options to customize.

J

so saying linux is good for day to day business and home use is correct?

windows is good for day to day business and home plus gaming video encoding basically everything u need to do on a pc

is this statement not correct?

lets not look at money part of this arguement but the useability of the 2 os's

clearly windows costs money because of what it can do or is this not correct

i would rather pay for my vista ultimate 64 bit and be able to everything linux can do and some more :) but hey thats just me

This thread is rapidly heading to the state of most threads in the Religion section.

ok question my intelect no probs but plz explain to me what linux does that xp vista does not?

a good anti virus and your sorted on xp
i dont use an anti virus on vista

what security concerns
apart from security what can linux do that windows cannot?

i think linux and windows have their strong and weak points

to me you sound like an anti windows user who gets defensive and attacks ppl when asked about linux

linux cannot run photoshop corel draw grabit usenext winavi and 99% of games

basically it cannot run any of the really good programs yet its better?

if you say so man

yes linux has programs that are similar to those but im almost 100% those versions fall very short

Linux vs Windows - my journey (in short).

News clients - cannot find a decent one for Linux.
Games - I don't play PC games - console FTW.
Office - Open Office does everything MS Office does - and it costs me zero.
DVD Ripping - K9Copy (Linux) is awesome - fast, one click, and does not hog CPUs
Database - mySQL is in production at my company - millions of records, no down time. Way cheaper than MSSQL.
Coding? I code everything in a text editor - always have, always will. MS NET is bloated and unstable - and I like being "under the hood". Linux I use AWK, PHP, C++ and various command line tools for data processing. Linux cost? Zero. Productivity far greater than on Windows.

What else?
Routing - built in. I can chop and slice and dice my routes endlessly - with no hassles. Awesome with ADSL being what it is in ZA.

Security - no viruses, no spyware, no keyloggers, no nothing. Beauty is.

As to Corel Draw etc? Well, I am as artistic as a blind toad, but I was always under the impression that the real graphic designers uses Macs? Correct me if I am mistaken.

no not really moeder

ppl say that mac is better than windows and it was until core 2 which mac uses now

its only the OS's, windows can do exactly what mac does
sometimes windows is faster sometimes mac

corel draw and photoshop runs just fine on windows based systems, i worked on a mac a friends company and i did not notice that mac was better/faster

but does linux make use of 4 cores
-> up to 64, in the standard kernel. I have answered this question before and you conveniently choose to ignore it.

i mean if you have a quadcore system?
-> yes

i dont know alot about linux to be honest
-> then don't talk about what you don't know, you ignorant fool. You have now thrice asked the same questions, which I have earnestly tried to answer for you, but as far as I can see you REFUSE to acknowledge the answers and continue touting questions.

can linux encode avi to mpeg
mpeg to dvd
avi to dvd etc?
once again, the answers are all yes. And in many cases, you will find that quite a few applications use code segments derived from Linux itself or other sorts of open source code (if you don't believe me, I'll gladly back it up with proof of how your beloved Windows uses a dumbed-down Unix networking layout. And you can still find the old relics from Win3.1 (which were just straight ported from Unix/Linux) in various places on Windows.)

So please, killadoob, READ and stop ARGUING by QUESTIONS when you've already been answered.

so basically apart from gaming, news servers and most awesome windows applications linux is better

ok im going to leave it at linux is good for some things and windows is good for some things :)

Don't need grabbit if you have open source news readers, quite a lot of them to choose from, go get a linux box - install compiz fusion and have a blast - do that for me please - and my primary install ins windows xp my secondary is kubuntu - reason i still have windows - GAMES.

don't know what you mean by the news server comment killaboob, but i have never had issues with them using linux
